We are looking for a reliable, experienced and proactive Leading Hand Carpenter to help oversee day-to-day site operations across our residential construction projects. This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in their work, leads by example and understands what it takes to keep a building site running smoothly. You will be responsible for coordinating trades, maintaining high standards of workmanship, keeping the site clean and safe, and ensuring work is progressing according to schedule. Most importantly, we need someone we can trust to be our eyes and ears on site when management is not present — someone who takes ownership, identifies problems early and keeps us informed without needing to be constantly supervised.
Key responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate subcontractors and trades on site to ensure work is completed efficiently and in the correct sequence.
- Ensure trades arrive as scheduled and that site activities run smoothly.
- Monitor progress against the construction program and identify potential delays before they become problems.
- Communicate with trades to resolve day-to-day issues and keep the project moving forward.
- Ensure work is completed to a high standard and in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe building site at all times.
- Ensure trades clean up after themselves and follow site safety requirements.
- Identify and address hazards, unsafe work practices and site access issues.
- Inspect ongoing work to identify defects, poor workmanship or items that need rectification.
- Provide regular updates on site progress, trade attendance, delays, issues and upcoming requirements.
About you
- Qualified carpenter with solid residential construction experience.
- Previous experience in a leading hand or supervisory role.
- Solid understanding of construction sequencing, plans and building methods.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Ability to manage subcontractors confidently and professionally.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- A proactive attitude with the ability to identify and solve problems independently.
- A strong focus on site safety, cleanliness and presentation.
- Reliable, punctual and accountable, with a genuine sense of responsibility.
