About Refugee Buddies
Refugee Buddies is an independent Sunshine Coast community group that advocates for the just and compassionate treatment of refugees and people seeking asylum, consistent with the international human rights standards that Australia helped develop and has endorsed.
We run the Living in Australia Program (LAP) and help settle CRISP (Community Refugee Sponsorship Program) families on the Sunshine Coast.
For one week, twice a year, 20 to 30 guests, from toddlers to people in their sixties, stay free of charge with local home stay hosts. For many, it’s their first experience of everyday Australian life: sharing breakfast and dinner with their hosts and joining them on outings. During the day, guests attend classes on Australian language and culture, spend a day at the beach learning beach safety, and visit Wildlife HQ.
The week ends with our Multicultural Dinner, where participants share food from their home countries, followed by dancing.
