Brand & Communications Intern | University Placement
Melbourne, VIC | Hybrid | Unpaid, university-approved placement
Company Description
Umbrellus is an infrastructure company reimagining how infrastructure is designed, manufactured and deployed using regenerative materials and advanced manufacturing.
We develop climate-resilient infrastructure with circular design principles informing material selection, production, use and end of life. Our initial focus is agriculture, where we are advancing research and product development in mycelium-based biocomposites and working towards field validation with industry partners.
Our ambition extends beyond individual products: we are developing an approach to infrastructure that can serve multiple industries, support local manufacturing and leave landscapes stronger over time.
Role Description
We are seeking a Brand & Communications Intern to help articulate Umbrellus’s ideas, research and progress through thoughtful written and visual communications.
This is a hybrid student placement based in Melbourne, with flexibility for some work from home. Working directly with the founder, you will contribute to how an emerging infrastructure company presents its work to industry, research partners and wider audiences.
The placement will be structured around a defined project, agreed learning objectives and regular supervision, aligned with your university’s requirements.
Responsibilities
- Help refine brand messaging and maintain a consistent voice across communications.
- Draft content for LinkedIn and our website, sharing our research, design process and project milestones.
- Support the development of presentations, company profiles and other communication materials.
- Conduct audience and brand research to inform content and messaging.
- Organise a content calendar and visual assets.
- Translate technical concepts into clear, engaging stories, with guidance from the founder.
Qualifications
- Currently studying marketing, communications, branding, design, business or a related discipline, with eligibility to undertake a university-approved placement.
- Robust writing skills, attention to detail and an interest in visual communication.
- A foundational understanding of branding, audience engagement or content development, gained through study, personal projects or experience.
- Curiosity about regenerative materials, architecture, agriculture or climate-resilient infrastructure.
- An ability to contribute ideas, respond to feedback and work collaboratively.
- Familiarity with presentation software and tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite is welcome.
Previous professional experience is not required. We welcome examples of university projects, personal writing and creative work.
Learning Opportunities
You will gain practical experience in brand storytelling, content development and communicating research-led innovation. You will receive direct founder supervision and regular feedback, with opportunities to develop portfolio work subject to project confidentiality.
Placement Requirements
This is an unpaid vocational placement for students completing a placement requirement within a university course or elective unit.
University approval and a formal placement agreement are required before commencement. Academic credit is determined by your university. Hours, duration and working arrangements will be agreed in line with course requirements.
How to Apply
Please submit your CV and a brief introduction outlining your interest in Umbrellus, your course and university, and your placement requirements, including required hours and preferred dates.
Examples of writing, design or other relevant work are welcome.
