Been drafting a while and still no one’s asked if you want to design?

Plenty of good drafters get stuck right there. You know the standards. Your sheets look sharp. You’re quick.

But the 12d side stays on someone else’s desk, and the chat about moving up never really happens.

So who’s this with?

A civil and structural consultancy with three offices across Southeast Queensland and around 70 to 80 people. Big enough to win serious work. Small enough that people know your name, and notice when you’re valuable.

The work’s a proper mix. Council and state government jobs make up a big chunk of it - roads, stormwater, subdivisions. There are bigger road packages in there too, plus the odd building project. So you’re not churning out the same drawing set every week.

Local government work is their bread and butter. If you’ve drafted for councils before, you’ll walk in knowing the drill.

They’re growing, but not by throwing bodies at it. They’d rather hire someone experienced and look after them than train from scratch. So you’re valued for what you already know, not treated as a pair of hands.

Here’s how the role runs.



The designers build the model in 12d. You set up the sheets, handle the sheet admin, and turn it into a drawing set that looks right first time. That’s the job from day one, and I won’t dress it up as anything else.

But the drafters who do best here are the ones who want to design. The civil manager is hands-on, spends real time with the team and reviews the work. So the path into 12d design is a real one, not something that gets mentioned at your review and forgotten.

So what are they after?

Someone past the learning-the-ropes stage. Mid-level is the sweet spot, and senior’s welcome too. If you’ve only got a year or two, that can still work, as long as it’s been in a consultancy.

You’ll know AutoCAD and the standards well, and you can get a clean set out the door without spinning your wheels.
