Legal Profession Liaison – Criminal Law (Queensland)

About BetterAussie BetterAussie is an exciting current Australian company delivering a series of online education programs for people facing court for criminal offences. The first program to go to market is an online anger and behaviour education program for people charged with offences involving anger, aggression or violence: common assault, assault occasioning bodily harm, public nuisance, obstruct or assault police, wilful damage, fail to leave licensed premises and similar matters.

The program is presented by a registered psychologist with 25 years’ experience with people before the criminal courts, alongside an experienced criminal barrister and other contributors. It is online, self-paced, six to eight hours, and completed before the court date. Participants finish with a certificate recording modules, outcomes achieved and their explanation. The program sends nothing to any court; what a participant chooses to show the court, they show through their lawyer.

Queensland criminal lawyers already tell traffic clients to complete traffic offenders programs before sentence. BetterAussie is built to be the program lawyers reach for in matters involving anger, aggression or violence. We launch in Queensland in early 2027 and nationally after that.

The role

This is the first commercial role in the business, and you will build it from the ground up with the founders, in a part of practice you already know. You will be the face of BetterAussie to the criminal law profession in Queensland: the person principals and duty lawyers think of when one of these matters lands on their desk.

Day to day, you will:

- Build BetterAussie’s relationships across the profession, in whatever mix of court corridors, phone calls, video meetings and coffees suits you and the people you are talking to.
- Introduce the program to criminal law firms and sole practitioners across Queensland and help them get started with it.
- Recruit and manage a small group of pilot firms ahead of launch.

- Represent BetterAussie with Legal Aid, ATSILS, the Queensland Law Society, the Bar and the courts.
- Bring back what you hear from practitioners and the courts, so the program and its materials keep improving.
- Organise and co-present CPD sessions with the program’s presenters.
- Keep the referral kit and the CRM current, with a short written report each week.

From the second quarter of 2027, you will take what works in Queensland to New South Wales, then further. You will not give legal advice, make any representation about sentencing outcomes, or offer referring lawyers any fee, discount or benefit. The program stands on its own.

About you

- Years inside the Queensland criminal justice system in a role that involved daily dealings with defence lawyers on pleas. You may be a retired or transitioning defence solicitor, a former police prosecutor, or a former ODPP, Legal Aid or duty lawyer.
- A network across more than one registry.
- You understand a plea/sentence well enough to explain, in a lawyer’s own language, exactly where this program fits.
- You have presented to lawyers before, or could tomorrow.
- Self-directed. You set your own week and report on it.
- You will complete the program yourself in your first fortnight, and you will only put your name to something you believe in.

This role is not suitable for anyone currently practising who would be referring their own clients.

Terms

- 12-month contract, three days per week, reviewed at six months, with scope to grow as the interstate roll-out begins.
- Retainer plus a variable component tied to firms activated and enrolments attributed, paid quarterly.
- Flexible working: you decide how much of your week is face to face and how much is remote. Based in South East Queensland, with travel reimbursed.
- Start late November 2026.
