Tasmanian Land Conservancy

Hobart

The Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC) is looking for a Field Ecologist to help us with our ecological field surveys and long-term monitoring, supporting our applied research and conservation management across our private reserve estate and other conservation landscapes.

About The TLC

The TLC is a for-purpose (not-for-profit), non-political, science and community-based organisation that protects nature on private land in Tasmania. Through science, community, and enduring commitment, we inspire and empower people to conserve nature in Tasmania. We do this for the benefit of current and future generations and for nature itself.

We conserve key habitats and ecosystems by raising funds to buy and manage private land and by working with landholders to protect nature on their land. In a changing world, our work is more important than ever. We hold that nature underpins all life and that our efforts contribute to a future where nature is flourishing, valued and fundamental to Tasmania's character. We believe we achieve more for nature by working with others and by applying the best available science in our decision making.

TLC's strategy is to expand protection and care for nature by integrating conservation models. These include TLC reserves that are owned and managed in perpetuity, land protected by conservation covenants through our Revolving Fund, and by working with landowners to protect the ecological values on their properties through programs including the Midlands Conservation Partnership, Land for Wildlife, Gardens for Wildlife and WildTracker. In 25 years of operation, TLC has helped to conserve 110,000 hectares throughout Tasmania. Our aim is to extend the land we manage as permanent reserve and other land conserved by an additional 25% by 2030 by continuing to build a community for conservation in Tasmania.

About The Position

This is an opportunity to join TLC’s Conservation Science and Planning team to monitor and protect nature across our diverse reserve network, from coastal to subalpine environments. Working alongside our Conservation Ecologists, you’ll undertake field surveys and long-term monitoring, with a strong focus on flora and vegetation, to help guide practical, evidence-based conservation management. This is a hands-on role for someone who loves being in the outdoors and has experience with ecological surveys. The successful candidate will be organised, collaborative and comfortable balancing strategic priorities with the day-to-day realities of managing a diverse reserve network.

Key responsibilities

- Supporting the Conservation Planning and Science Team to implement long-term ecological monitoring programs (landscape, surveillance and targeted) across TLC reserves, which are often remote.
- Completion of field surveys (flora, fauna and ecological communities) over multiday trips, including installation & maintenance of monitoring equipment.
- Coordination of volunteer logistics (i.e. sourcing volunteers for volunteer trips, equipment allocations etc.)
- Data entry and collation, including into GIS databases and under guidance prepare TLC reserve covenant documentation.

The position is offered as an ongoing, full-time role (1.0 FTE = 76 hours a fortnight) based in Hobart, Tasmania. The TLC provides a flexible work environment where a good work-life balance can be maintained. Our remuneration package (pro rata) is based on TLC Level 21.-2.2 (Salary Range $79,435 - $84,730, plus statutory superannuation) commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience. We envision a starting date in November 2026 as soon as is practical.
