Coomera
Best Staffing is recruiting for an Early Childhood Teacher for a privately owned, Meeting-rated early learning service in Coomera. You'll be employed directly by the service, not by an agency. Best Staffing is handling the recruitment and will introduce you to the centre at the phone screen.
Most centres want the qualification and the years. This one wants something harder to find: a teacher who shows up differently.
You're the one who notices a colleague has too much on and steps in before they ask. When something in the room isn't working, your first instinct is "how do I fix this?", not "whose job was that?". You'd rather learn a way of working properly than be handed a program and left to deliver it.
The service can teach you its approach. It can't teach character.
Why this room is open
The kindy room, children aged 3 to 5, needs its next teacher. The program, the documentation and the rhythm of the day are yours to lead, with the educators in the room working alongside you.
The service is owned by a small Gold Coast group, not a listed company or a fund, and the people who run it are at the centre.
The team is being built around one thing: turning up for the children and wanting the best outcome for them. You'd be part of that, and expected to add to it.
What you'll do
- lead the kindy room: the program, the daily rhythm and the educators working in it with you;
- plan indoor and outdoor experiences that follow the children's interests;
- keep the room's documentation current, including documenting the children's experiences;
- build relationships with the children, their families and the team;
- hold ratios, supervision and child safety as the non-negotiables they are;
- lead supervision in the yard, with something planned for the children, not just children watched;
- take ownership of areas of the classroom and keep them prepared and purposeful;
- act as Responsible Person after induction.
This suits you if
- you'd rather lead a room in a small, privately owned centre than deliver a program handed down from head office;
- you're comfortable being the senior person on the floor at the start and end of the day;
- you stay calm and hold the standard when an afternoon gets busy;
- you ask questions, stay curious and take on a current way of working with patience and humility.
It doesn't suit you if
- "I did the last job, so you do the next one" sounds fair to you;
- you'd rather keep doing things your own way than learn the service's approach with an open mind;
- following the process and procedures feels optional;
- a busy room is a good enough reason for the standard to slip.
How we'll know it's working
In your first 90 days, we'd expect to see:
- what's set out each morning, indoors and out, reflects what the children were interested in the day before;
- additional documentation completed, with your own work in it;
- educators in the yard who know their part, with you leading the supervision;
- a room team that is clear on how the classroom runs and works as one;
- children settled with you, and families who know you and trust what you tell them;
- a room that is clean, prepared and works.
Hours
Permanent full time, Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours a week. Shifts sit between the 6:15am open and the 6:30pm close. The roster is part fixed, part rotating: most weeks you'll open on some days and close on others,
and on those shifts you'll often be the senior person on the floor. Start as soon as your notice allows.
Who we're looking for
- an approved Early Childhood Teacher qualification, or actively working towards one, and teacher registration as required;
- a current Queensland Blue Card;
- current First Aid, CPR and child protection training;
- working knowledge of the National Quality Standard and the regulations: ratios, supervision, child safety;
- the ability to engage a group of 3 to 5 year olds and hold their attention;
- the judgement to handle what comes up in a room, and the sense to escalate what should be escalated;
- humble, patient and positive, with an open mind and a willingness to share the load.
Highly regarded: the ability to guide children's behaviour and keep interactions positive.
You don't need experience in the service's approach. It will be taught. You do need to be open to a way of working that may differ from your last centre.
What you'll get
- a room that is yours to lead, with leadership that backs you;
- training in the service's approach, from the people who use it every day;
- a permanent Monday to Friday week, at one centre.
One question before you apply
It's mid-morning. The kindy children are spread across the yard, one group has lost interest in what was set out, and a family arrives early with a question. You're leading the supervision. What do you do first, and what do you deliberately leave for later?
If you've had a morning like this, tell us about that one instead: what happened, what you did first, and what you let wait.
Put your answer in your application note, with your ECT experience. There isn't a textbook answer. We want to understand how you think, and we'll talk it through with you at the phone screen.
Applications come to Best Staffing. You'll hear from us within two business days.
