House Steel Frame Pty Ltd at Salisbury, QLD, is looking for an experienced Carpenter to join the team. Australian owned and operated, the business designs, manufactures and supplies custom light gauge steel framing for residential and commercial construction, roll-forming wall frames, roof trusses, floor joists, ceiling and roof battens and structural steel to order from TrueCore BlueScope steel. Builders use the system because it arrives straighter, holds its dimensions and goes together faster than traditional timber framing.
The service runs well past supply alone: every frame is detailed with the client and certified by a structural engineer before it is made, delivered to site on a scheduled run by the company’s own trucks, and, where the builder wants it, installed by its own carpenters working alongside the site supervisor, with component-marked plans and practical support before and after the install. Work comes from residential and commercial builders on projects across Australia, and the business sells on precision, quick turnaround and a framing system that cuts waste on site and lasts. You will join the crew that takes our client’s frames from the factory floor to the builder’s site: setting out, erecting and fixing off framing systems to the certified drawings, then finishing the job to the standard the business has built its name on.
The week mixes installation work on site with preparation and pre-assembly in the workshop, and you will work closely with the detailing team, the delivery crew and the builders’ site supervisors.
CARPENTER | House Steel Frame Pty Ltd | Salisbury, QLD
Key Responsibilities
- Read the component-marked shop drawings,
engineered frame plans and specifications before each job to establish the materials required, the dimensions and tolerances to be held and the order the installation must follow, and set the job out on site accordingly.
- Select and order the timber, steel sections, fixings and consumables each job calls for, and check delivered frames, trusses, joists and battens against the component schedule so that shortages or transit damage are picked up before the crew starts.
- Erect wall frames, floor systems and roof framing, lay sub-flooring and floorboards, and verify that every structure is plumb, level, square and true to the engineered drawings before it is fixed off.
- Cut and shape materials to size, then assemble and nail the cut and shaped parts into position, including cutting the timber joints needed where conventional carpentry meets the steel framing system.
- Fix fascia panels, sheath and batten out roofs, install external wall cladding, and set door and window frames square and true into their openings.
- Pre-assemble prepared timber into structures and fittings in the workshop so they reach site ready to install, keeping the crew’s time on the builder’s floor as short as possible.
- Build and strip formwork for concrete footings, slabs and bases where a job calls for it, and carry out repairs and alterations to existing framing, fittings and finishes on renovation, extension and post-installation callback work.
- Work with metals, plastic laminates and perspex as jobs require, including fitting swaged stud connections, driving galvanised M6 screws into the dimpled connections and installing the K-bracing that braces the frame.
- Receive and unload deliveries from the company’s trucks and stage frames, trusses and battens on site in the sequence the installation will follow, keeping the set-down clear of other trades.
- Work alongside the builder’s site supervisor so the installation fits the site programme, and provide the pre-installation and post-installation support the business offers, reporting anything that does not fit back to the design and detailing team rather than cutting a certified frame to suit on site.
- Work safely at heights and in the workshop, use and maintain hand and power tools correctly, keep the work area tidy and organised, and help bring apprentices and newer crew members up to speed on the system.
Education and Experience
- At least 1 year of relevant carpentry experience.
- An AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or an AQF Certificate IV in a relevant field.
Personal attributes
- Accurate and methodical, with a good eye for line, level and square.
- Reliable and punctual, and able to keep an installation to programme.
- Takes pride in a protected, tidy and well-finished job.
Salary & Hours
- Permanent position, full-time, 38 hours per week.
- $75,000 to $85,000 plus superannuation per annum.
If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you! Please be sure to combine a covering letter addressing the key criteria set out above as the first page of your resume.
