About the role
We're looking for reliable, communicative, adaptable and neuroaffirming support workers and mentors to provide one-to-one support to children, young people and adults with disability. This is a relationship-focused role for someone who enjoys helping people build confidence, develop independence, explore their interests and participate in their community. We value a neuroaffirming, person-centred approach that respects individual differences, autonomy and each person's unique way of experiencing the world.
Many of our support opportunities involve working with children and young people during weekday afternoons, particularly between 3 pm and 6 pm. Availability during these hours is highly desirable, along with some flexibility for other shifts as new referrals arise.
This role could suit someone looking for additional work alongside another job, university studies or employment in education, disability support or community services.
Key responsibilities
- Providing one-to-one support tailored to each participant's individual needs, interests, strengths and goals.
- Supporting community access, social activities and participation in everyday life.
- Helping participants develop confidence, independence and daily living skills at their own pace.
- Building positive, trusting relationships while maintaining appropriate skilled boundaries.
- Supporting people to engage in activities, explore their interests and work towards their goals in ways that respect their individual needs and preferences.
- Communicating effectively with families and the wider support team.
- Providing consistent, respectful support while adapting to changing needs and situations.
- Supporting participants in a neuroaffirming way that respects their autonomy, communication styles, sensory needs and individual differences.
About you
- Reliable and consistent: You follow through on commitments, arrive on time and understand the importance of continuity for participants and their families.
- A strong communicator: You provide clear, timely updates, respond to messages and communicate proactively about availability, changes or concerns.
- Calm under pressure: You're able to think clearly, remain patient and respond appropriately when situations become challenging or unpredictable.
- Adaptable and resourceful: You're comfortable adjusting your approach to suit different personalities, needs and communication styles.
- Confident and professional: You can use sound judgement, maintain boundaries and navigate challenging situations while remaining respectful, calm and supportive.
- Neuroaffirming: You respect neurodivergent people's identities, experiences,
communication styles and ways of interacting with the world. You understand that different ways of thinking, communicating and processing experiences are valid, and you're willing to adapt your approach to suit the individual.
- Person-centred: You recognise each person's strengths, interests and preferences, support their autonomy and encourage independence without placing unnecessary expectations on them to conform to others' expectations.
- Empathetic and open-minded: You approach people without judgement, remain curious about their individual needs and are willing to learn and adapt.
