Role overview

Barayamal is looking for a volunteer Embedded Software Engineer to help assess and prototype embedded or connected-device software ideas only where they are relevant to Barayamal programs or operations. This is an unpaid volunteer role with no fixed minimum hours. Volunteers choose what they can reasonably contribute, and tasks are agreed around availability. This remote volunteer opportunity is intended for people who currently live in Australia.

What you may help with

- Advise on firmware, device integration or prototype feasibility for agreed projects.
- Write or review small embedded software components where relevant.
- Document build, test and hardware assumptions clearly.
- Help connect embedded work with backend or cloud services if needed.
- Join occasional remote check-ins when mutually convenient.





Preferred experience

- Embedded software, firmware, C/C++, device integration or IoT project experience preferred.
- Ability to keep prototypes practical, secure and well documented.
- Ability to communicate clearly and work independently on agreed tasks.
- Interest in using technology to support First Nations entrepreneurship and community impact.

Eligibility and expectations

- You currently live in Australia.
- You understand this is an unpaid volunteer role, not a paid employment position.
- There are no fixed minimum hours, required shifts, mandatory attendance requirements or penalties for absence.
- Contributions are flexible and agreed around the volunteer's availability.
- Volunteers can pause or step back if circumstances change, with reasonable notice where possible.
