Bring your values to work. Help people move from homelessness towards a protected, sustainable housing.
Are you committed to community service that puts dignity, choice and practical support first? 55 Central is seeking a Housing Navigator who combines compassion with purposeful action. We particularly value an understanding of homelessness and experience helping people navigate housing and community support systems.
Our values guide how we serve
55 Central provides housing and support to people facing homelessness, living with mental health or addiction, or experiencing other challenges affecting their lives. We are a place of safety, respect, hope and recovery. That means building trust without judgement, listening to what matters to each resident, recognising their strengths and supporting their right to make decisions.
Our approach is trauma-informed, strengths-based, recovery-oriented and person-centered: we work alongside people, rather than make decisions for them.
About the role
Reporting to the Coordinator – Accommodation Services, you will support Crisis Accommodation Service residents to identify housing options, overcome barriers and transition towards sustainable accommodation. You will work within a three-month support framework, with extensions where required because of individual needs, capacity, housing availability or service gaps, consistent with Critical Time Intervention principles. Working with up to 12 residents when the service is at full capacity, you will coordinate practical, person-led support that strengthens tenancy readiness,
maintains continuity of care and reduces the risk of returning to homelessness.

- Develop housing plans with residents, agreeing practical goals, responsibilities and timelines.
- Help residents explore community housing, private rentals, supported accommodation and specialist services, and navigate eligibility and application processes.
- Build tenancy readiness through support with budgeting, landlord communication, property care and understanding tenancy rights.
- Advocate alongside residents and coordinate referrals to mental health, alcohol and other drug, disability, financial counselling and legal services.
- Build effective relationships with housing providers, government agencies, community services and internal teams.
- Coordinate timely exit and transition planning, keeping residents' choices, culture and safety central.
- Maintain accurate, confidential records in SHIP, monitor outcomes and contribute to reflective practice and service improvement.
About you
- A Certificate IV or higher in a relevant human services discipline and at least two years of appropriate experience or demonstrated equivalent.
- A sound understanding of trauma-informed care and the cultural and social factors affecting homelessness, mental health and alcohol and other drug issues.
- Demonstrated competence supporting people experiencing mental health and/or alcohol and other drug issues.
- Experience in case management, advocacy and referral, with knowledge of community and government resources.
- Cultural competency and experience working respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong interpersonal, written communication, deescalation and organisational skills.
- Confidence using word processing, spreadsheets and client databases, and maintaining confidential records.
- A current C class driver's licence, current National Police Clearance, Working with Children Clearance, and a First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain one.
- Direct experience in homelessness services, housing navigation or service navigation support particularly valued.
