Working under the direction of the warehouse manager, the main duty is to assist with the picking / packing of our daily delivery runs.

Dave Mullen Wines, as a wine distribution company, employs three full time delivery drivers.

The drivers start work from 8 AM onwards each day, the warehouse team work together to ensure that all stock is correctly picked and packed ready for the drivers to start work.

The warehouse team start at 7 AM Monday, 6 AM Tuesday to Friday in order to have the delivery runs picked and ready to be loaded into the vans when the drivers arrive at work. The daily ‘delivery runs’ are prepared the previous afternoon by our office staff.

Punctuality is extremely key, lost time means more pressure on getting deliveries organised which often results in picking errors.

Accuracy in picking stock to be delivered is extremely important.

Double checking that the right wine is picked [winery, vintage, style of wine and quantity] will eliminate errors – all ‘miss picks’ cost the business approximately 1 hour each to rectify, so are both costly and time consuming.

Our driver’s delivery on average 100 dozen wines per delivery run – a combined total of up to 1500 dozen wines per week.

Clearly all of this wine needs to be replaced on a weekly basis, i.e. if 1000 dozen go out then approximately 1000 dozen is received from the various wineries.

Once delivery drivers have left on their daily runs, receiving and packing away stock received is the next priority.

Tuesday is normally the biggest day in terms of receiving stock, we order wines from wineries on a Monday and generally our WA wineries arrange delivery on Tuesday’s.

All wine received needs to be checked off against ‘supplier orders and invoices’ to ensure accuracy, and once orders are confirmed the orders can be processed by our office staff.

Some wine received will be used to fill the ‘pick bays’ [i.e. bays that daily orders are picked from], some will be stored in higher pallet bays. We will discuss the importance of checking details such as correct wine brand and vintage etc when packing stock received away.

The second part of this role will be undertaking a delivery run as required

This will be mainly in the city and inner suburbs and will be based on our requirements – a business like ours needs to have flexibility as demand varies week to week.

This can either be in our back up delivery van or if convenient in your own vehicle on your way home. [to be discussed]

This process and the relevant paperwork involved will be explained fully prior to any deliveries being undertaken.

There will also be ongoing general duties.

Cleanliness of the warehouse is important and needs regular attention.

At all times security is a major issue. All staff need to be aware of security at all times and daily opening / closing procedures need to be adhered to as well as having gates locked throughout the day while working in the warehouse.

While on deliveries locking the vehicle when unattended is important. We are aware of delivery vehicles being targeted with stock losses mainly due to complacency and vehicles that are left unlocked are not covered by insurance.

Common sense needs to be applied to work attire, in particular with footwear. You are working on your feet most of the day on a concrete floor so both comfortable and safe shoes are recommended.
