About the Role:

Be part of a nationally significant research project seeking to better understand polysubstance use and new psychoactive substances among young Australians and inform practical, evidence-based harm reduction responses.

Based within Curtin’s National Drug Research Institute (NDRI), the Project Coordinator will work alongside researchers, health services and people with lived experience to help deliver an innovative three-year MRFF-funded study across WA, Victoria and the ACT.

Working closely with Perth based chief investigators, you will coordinate project activities, monitor timelines and quality, and contribute to qualitative and quantitative research. This role would suit a motivated, emerging researcher with experience in project coordination, public health or alcohol and other drug (AOD) research, who is enthusiastic about harm reduction and collaborative, co-designed research with real-world impact.

This is a part time (up to 0.8 FTE, offering flexibility to negotiate your own working schedule), fixed-term position until 28 September 2029. Based in Technology Park, which is adjacent to Curtin University’s Bentley Campus and is expected to commence in January 2027.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Coordinating the day-to-day operations of the project across three data collection jurisdictions and the UTAS quantitative data analysis hub
- Managing project meetings and logistics, liaising with partner organisations, and tracking and supporting project progress
- Contributing to the collection, coordination and collation of research data
- Supporting ethics submissions and responses, alongside other project administration and reporting requirements
- Monitoring project activities, timelines and deliverables to support effective implementation across the three-year project
- Contributing to all phases of the research project, working collaboratively with the broader project team and partners

Who we are looking for (selection criteria):

- Demonstrated project coordination or project management experience, with the ability to manage project plans, timelines and competing priorities
- Experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods, including contributing to research data collection and management
- Solid interpersonal and communication skills,

with the ability to build effective relationships and liaise sensitively with diverse stakeholders and partner organisations
- Experience working with people with lived experience of drug use and using co-design approaches, with appropriate sensitivity and respect
- Experience in the alcohol and other drug (AOD) sector or public health research
- Strong written communication, organisational and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines

Desirable:

- Knowledge of drug use among young people in festival settings
- Project coordination experience in a research setting

Role Requirements:

1. As this is a fixed-term contract, you will require current work rights in Australia that match the tenure of this role
2. Successful applicants are subject to a National Police Clearance, and background, integrity, and reference checks to Curtin’s satisfaction
3. Ability to work outside of normal office hours when required

Your new Team: National Drug Research Institute (NDRI)

The National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) is one of the largest centres of alcohol and other drug research expertise in Australia. The Institute’s purpose is to conduct and disseminate research that supports evidence-informed policy and practice to prevent and minimise alcohol and other drug-related health, social, cultural and economic harms.
