About Southern Launch Southern Launch is Australia's leading spaceport operator, building the sovereign capability required to get to space and back. Headquartered in South Australia, Southern Launch operates two of the nation's leading commercial spaceports, the Koonibba Test Range and the Whalers Way Orbital Launch Complex. Providing orbital and suborbital launch, hypersonic flight, re-entries from space and range services, for commercial, civil and defence customers. Through regulator-proven, vertically integrated mission services, Southern Launch's unique infrastructure enables direct ascent trajectories to a wide range of orbital inclination. While more than 47,000 square kilometres of secure, remote operating areas support advanced testing and recovery operations.
About the role
The Instrumentation & Sensor Systems Engineer will develop, integrate and support the instrumentation and sensing capabilities used across Southern Launch’s launch ranges and operational facilities. The role will focus on identifying the right technical solutions for operational requirements and ensuring instrumentation is reliable, maintainable and effectively integrated with wider mission systems. Working across sensors, data acquisition, positioning, timing, communications and supporting software, you will contribute to the selection, deployment, testing and sustainment of range instrumentation. You will also help improve the consistency of engineering solutions, optimise the use of equipment and strengthen Southern Launch’s internal capability to support its systems throughout their lifecycle. Responsibilities
• Define instrumentation and sensor requirements based on operational needs, engineering constraints and expected system performance.
• Assess existing and emerging instrumentation capabilities to identify suitable technologies, capability gaps and opportunities for improvement.
• Develop technical specifications and support the selection of sensors,
data acquisition equipment and associated instrumentation systems.
• Evaluate equipment suitability for different deployment environments, considering factors such as accuracy, reliability, maintainability and environmental conditions.
• Design and support the integration of instrumentation with communications, data processing, monitoring and operational systems.
• Develop and maintain system interfaces, data requirements and integration documentation to support consistent and reliable information exchange.
• Conduct equipment testing, commissioning and performance assessments to verify that instrumentation meets defined engineering requirements.
• Analyse sensor outputs and system performance data to identify anomalies, investigate faults and improve data quality and reliability.
• Support the implementation of remote monitoring, diagnostics and automation to improve system visibility and reduce routine manual intervention.
• Coordinate maintenance, calibration, fault diagnosis, repairs and equipment upgrades to sustain instrumentation throughout its operational lifecycle.
• Work with suppliers, service providers and internal engineering teams to resolve technical issues and assess equipment modifications or replacement options.
• Develop standardised technical documentation, maintenance procedures and configuration records to improve consistency, maintainability and long-term engineering support. Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree in electrical, electronic, mechatronic, instrumentation, control systems or another relevant engineering discipline.
• Demonstrated experience with instrumentation,
sensor systems, data acquisition or the integration of complex technical equipment.
• Understanding of sensor performance, measurement principles, data interfaces and the factors affecting system accuracy and reliability.
• Experience in system testing, commissioning, troubleshooting and technical performance analysis.
• Ability to develop engineering specifications, test procedures, maintenance documentation and technical reports.
• Solid problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external technical suppliers. Preferred skills and experience
• Experience with radar, optical sensors, meteorological instrumentation, RF systems, telemetry, positioning or environmental monitoring equipment.
• Familiarity with instrumentation used in aerospace, aviation, defence, industrial monitoring or remote sensing.
• Experience with data acquisition systems, signal processing, time synchronisation or the integration of multiple sensor sources.
• Knowledge of calibration methods, measurement uncertainty, preventative maintenance and equipment lifecycle management.
• Experience with remote monitoring, equipment automation, diagnostics or supervisory control systems.
• Familiarity with electrical interfaces, communications protocols, embedded systems and industrial networking.
• Experience deploying and maintaining instrumentation in remote, field-based or environmentally challenging locations.
• Experience with technical procurement, supplier evaluation, equipment acceptance and the development of standardised engineering solutions. Security clearance requirements Applicants must be eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance through the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA). For more information about security clearance eligibility and the vetting process, visit the AGSVA website.
