Amata
Position Descriptor:
Amata Anangu School is one of the largest schools in the Anangu Lands Partnership, situated in the far northwest corner of South Australia. The Amata community is in the western Musgrave Ranges, west of the Stuart Highway, approximately 500 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs and just south of the Northern Territory border.
The Amata community consists of about 350 people. It has a general store, a clinic and a world-famous art centre.
Amata Anangu School is a bilingual school where Pitjantjatjara and English are valued in teaching and learning. Anangu and non-Anangu staff work together across two languages and cultures.
The school's work is grounded in the Anangu Bilingual Education Policy, which recognises the importance of culture, language, family, Country and community in education. Tjukurpa/Wapar, Ngura, Walytjapii, Wangka and Kurunpa provide an important foundation for teaching and learning at Amata.
At Amata, Anangu and non-Anangu staff work side by side with shared purpose and responsibility. The Pitjantjatjara concepts of malpa and tjungu reflect the collaborative relationships that underpin our work across the school. Early years teachers are expected to work respectfully and effectively within this bilingual, bicultural context, recognising the importance of children's first language, culture, identity and relationships in their learning and development.
Teaching and learning in the early years focus on building strong foundations for learning, wellbeing and development. Play-based learning, intentional teaching and meaningful interactions support children to develop communication,
early literacy and numeracy, social skills, independence and curiosity. Learning experiences are guided by the South Australian Curriculum and relevant early years frameworks, with learning designed to be engaging, purposeful and responsive to each child's strengths, interests and needs. Building strong relationships with children and families is central to creating a safe, welcoming and supportive learning workplace.
We are seeking an early years classroom teacher who is committed to supporting young children's learning and development and is willing to learn from the knowledge, skills and experiences of Anangu staff, families and the wider community.
To apply for this position, please submit your current resume together with a written response addressing each of the following questions:
1. Our teachers work closely with Anangu Educators to support children's learning and development. What do you think makes a strong collaborative teaching relationship, and how would you contribute to a classroom where different knowledge, skills and perspectives are valued?
2. What would you do in your first few months at Amata to understand the context, build relationships and learn from the children, Anangu staff, families and your colleagues?
3.
How do you support young children's learning and development through play-based learning, intentional teaching and meaningful interactions? Describe how you identify children's learning needs, plan engaging experiences and use observations and other evidence to guide your teaching.
