Most EPs spend some of their year building a caseload. That means chasing referrers, sitting through quiet afternoons and wondering if it’ll ever pick up.
This role is different.
One of the senior EPs at Proactive Health Adelaide has decided to start his own business. He joined six years ago, grew into a senior role, and the team backed him the whole way. Now there’s an established caseload ready for the next person, with clients who already trust the clinic and a team that knows how to support someone new.
I’m Stuart, Head of Talent at Proactive Health. If you’re a grad or in your first couple of years, I don’t see opportunities like this come up very often.
About the Clinics
Jacob runs several clinics across southern Adelaide, and the culture is something special. Everyone here has a genuine say in how the clinics run and where the clinical work is heading, from the newest grad up. Currently they run programs an EP proposed, and they are booming. You’ll work alongside exercise physiologists, physiotherapists and social workers. When a client needs more than exercise, someone just down the hall can help.
The clinics are part of Proactive Health, a national network of more than 40 allied health businesses across 350+ locations in Australia. It sits in the background most of the time, until you want CPD, a mentor outside your own clinic or a clear path for your career.
What Your First Few Months Look Like
You’ll start with a full diary and a proper handover, so you won’t be starting from nothing. Your caseload will cover DVA, Medicare EPC, NDIS, Home Care Packages, workers’ compensation and private clients. In your first week you might meet a long term client managing heart disease who’s been progressing steadily for two years, followed by an NDIS participant working on strength and independence.
After lunch you could run a group session at one of the other sites.
You’ll have regular supervision through the new grad program. If you’re stuck on a case, there’s always a senior clinician to talk it through with.
Day to day, you’ll be:
- Running assessments, including functional testing, health screening and exercise capacity
- Picking up existing programs and building on the progress clients have already made
- Designing evidence based exercise plans for clinic, gym, home and community settings
- Delivering individual and small group sessions
- Working with the physio and social work team on shared clients
- Keeping your clinical documentation in line with ESSA standards and Proactive Health’s governance framework
You’ll also be living in the south of Adelaide. You’ve got the Fleurieu Peninsula on your doorstep, the Port Noarlunga jetty for a snorkel, and McLaren Vale for a long Sunday lunch. Your commute stays short, and the city is close when you want it.
Requirements
- A recognised degree in Exercise Physiology or Clinical Exercise Physiology
- ESSA accreditation as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, or eligibility for accreditation
- New graduate up to two years’ experience

- A National Police Check and NDIS Worker Screening Check,
current or willing to obtain
- A South Australian Working with Children Check, current or willing to obtain
- Warmth with clients and a genuine interest in learning
If you’re finishing your degree this year and waiting on accreditation, apply anyway. I’d rather talk to you now than have you miss out.
