Since 1948, artists at Ernabella Arts have been creating artwork, sharing stories and passing knowledge between generations in the studio. We are looking for a hands-on Studio Manager to keep that studio thriving – supporting artists day to day and helping their work reach audiences across Australia and beyond.
About Ernabella Arts
Based in the Pukatja/Ernabella community on the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the northwest of South Australia, Ernabella Arts is Australia’s oldest continuously operating Indigenous art centre and a cultural, social and economic hub for the community. It provides employment, training and income for artists and the wider community, and works within Aṉangu cultural frameworks, respecting Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara language, culture, Traditional Law and leadership.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Art Centre Manager, you will run the Art Centre studio and provide artist, administration, marketing and project support. Highlights of the role include:
- Supporting artists in the studio – managing the studio and art supplies, facilitating the production of quality artworks, and cataloguing work and artist biographies in SAM database.
- Getting the work out into the world – implementing pricing, marketing and sales strategies, producing promotional material, and organising packaging, freight and retail stock.
- Travelling with artists – supporting artists to attend regional meetings and interstate industry events.
- Developing people – encouraging, training and mentoring Indigenous arts workers, and coordinating volunteers and interns.
- Keeping the Art Centre running well – supporting funding submissions, membership records, and the upkeep of facilities and the Art Centre vehicle.
The role, together with the Art Centre Manager is due to commence on 1 February 2028 and include a 1 month handover to support the transition.
About You
You will bring:
- Experience facilitating art creation and supporting artists in a studio environment, including studio management.
- An understanding of Indigenous cultural practices and traditions in artmaking.
- Knowledge of the Australian and international Indigenous art markets.
- Experience in arts marketing, exhibition coordination and critical art assessment.
- Robust teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills, and confidence with Microsoft 365 and the SAM database.
- The ability to live and work well in a remote community.
- A current (manual) driver’s licence and a police check (or willingness to obtain one).
Experience in a First Nations art centre, grant writing, or an understanding of Pitjantjatjara and/or Yankunytjatjara language and culture will be highly regarded.
Own 4WD vehicle is highly desirable.
What’s on Offer
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience with salary sacrifice options
- Onsite accommodation
- Relocation assistance
- Travel allowances for exhibitions and industry events
- Attendance at national exhibitions, art fairs, conferences and industry events
- Professional development and training in arts management and governance
- Opportunities to build relationships across the Australian Indigenous and contemporary art sector
- 4WD training for safe remote travel
Please note: Pukatja/Ernabella is a remote, alcohol-free community. Some evening and weekend work and regular travel are part of the role.
