The Family Law Counsellor provides individual, couple and family counselling to assist people resolve difficulties and build stronger relationships. Family Law Counselling involves working with all family members including children and is primarily accountable to the safety and best interests of children.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a culturally responsive and reflective practitioner with a robust understanding of the impacts of trauma and the impacts of family and domestic violence on children, individuals and families. You will be confident working within the complexity of family dynamics with a particular focus on post-separation. You will engage with both victim-survivors and perpetrators to promote safety, self-determination and positive change, while communicating effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. You will also demonstrate sound professional judgement, a commitment to continuous improvement in your clinical practice, and the ability to explain organisational policies and processes to clients in a clear and appropriate manner.

To be successful in this role you will have:

- Tertiary qualification (AQF level 7) in social work, psychology, counselling or related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience working with individuals,



couples or families in a therapeutic context.
- Demonstrated experience in providing counselling to those effected by Family and Domestic Violence including children and those using violence in relationships.

It would be a bonus if you have:

- Post graduate (AQF level 8) qualification in social work, psychology, counselling or related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience facilitating therapeutic Family and Domestic Violence behaviour change groups.

What you will be doing

- Provide high quality, responsive counselling and groupwork (therapeutic and psycho-educational) interventions which respond to the needs of a diverse range of individuals, groups and communities.
- Promote client safety through universal holistic screening and risk assessment utilising the Detection of Overall Risk Screen (DOORS) tool.
- Ensure effective interventions through sound case formulation, planning, review and closure processes and appropriate reporting and referrals.
- Assist clients affected by family violence (including children who experience or witness family violence) and engage individuals who use violent behaviours in their relationships to change.
- Under general direction be responsible for various activities and tasks that ensure effective intervention such as accurate record keeping/note taking; provision of education and community information; participation in case conferences; and comprehensive knowledge of local service and referral options for clients.
- Ensure sound interventions based on current clinical evidence and therapeutic practices.
