- $175,000 – $195,000 plus 15.4% superannuation (pro rata for part time)
- Canberra highly preferred.
The Role
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is seeking a doctor to join its aviation medical team as an Aviation Medical Officer within the Client Services Centre Branch.
As an Aviation Medical Officer, you will contribute directly to aviation safety by undertaking aviation medical certification assessments for pilots and air traffic controllers. Working under the supervision and guidance of the Manager – Medical Certification (MMC) and alongside experienced colleagues, you will apply your clinical expertise to assess medical information, review specialist reports and support risk-based decisions regarding fitness for aviation duties.
This is a developmental role designed to build capability and expertise in aviation medical certification under senior clinical supervision.
This is an opportunity for doctors to apply their existing clinical judgement and experience in a regulatory medical setting focused on aeromedical assessment, fitness for aviation duties and risk-based medical decision-making, while developing expertise in aviation and regulatory medicine.
You do not need to already be an aviation medicine specialist to apply. Doctors with strong general clinical foundations and an interest in aviation medicine, occupational medicine, fitness-for-duty assessment or safety-critical medicine are encouraged to apply.
Canberra is highly preferred as the work location for this role. The role may be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis, with a minimum commitment of 0.7 FTE (3.5 days per week), and may require occasional interstate travel.
As the Aviation Medical Officer, you will:
- Undertake aviation medical certificate assessments under supervision, including review of clinical information, investigation results, specialist reports and operational risk considerations.
- Apply clinical judgement to assess medical fitness for aviation duties in accordance with relevant aviation medical standards, legislation,
policy and guidance.
- Prepare certification determinations and correspondence outlining medical reasoning, conditions, surveillance requirements and follow-up actions under clinical supervision.
- Liaise with applicants, Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAMEs), treating practitioners and specialists to obtain relevant clinical information.
- Contribute to complex aviation medical case discussions with experienced medical officers.
- Escalate complex, unusual or high-risk cases to senior medical officers for review and decision where required.
- Support research, analysis and development of educational materials where required.
- Engage professionally with regulated entities, aviation stakeholders and other health professionals.
- Other duties as required.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Sound clinical judgement and analytical skills.
- Broad clinical knowledge and the ability to assess and interpret medical information from multiple sources.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly document clinical reasoning.
- Ability to work effectively under supervision within established regulatory practices and assigned delegations.
- Ability to recognise when a matter requires senior clinical advice or escalation.
- Understanding of, or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of, aviation medical standards, certification principles and relevant legislation.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- An evidence-based and considered approach to clinical decision-making.
- Interest in developing expertise in aviation, occupational or regulatory medicine.
Doctors from a range of clinical backgrounds may be suitable,
including general practice, hospital medicine, emergency medicine, occupational health, rehabilitation, defence health or other areas involving assessment of fitness, function or risk.
Mandatory qualifications, licenses and experience
- General or Specialist Registration (without conditions that would limit the performance of the duties of the role) as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), or eligibility for such full registration.
Desirable experience and interests
- Experience in aviation medical assessment or assessment of fitness for safety-critical work.
- Experience in occupational health, pre-employment medicals, fitness-for-duty or return-to-work assessments.
- Experience preparing regulatory, occupational or medico-legal medical reports.
- Interest in developing capability in Drug and Alcohol Management Plan (DAMP) medical review work, with training supported where required.
- Interest in further professional development in aviation medicine, including DAME training and/or relevant postgraduate study.
Eligibility Requirements
Employment with CASA is subject to conditions prescribed within the Civil Aviation Act 1988 (the Act) and the CASA Enterprise Agreement. The following eligibility requirements apply to this position:
