NAAJA is seeking a Peacemaking Coordinator – Central Australia to coordinate culturally grounded responses to community conflict and safety concerns across Mparntwe/Alice Springs. Working alongside Elders, community leaders, families and service providers, you will help prevent conflict, strengthen relationships and support community-led solutions.
About NAAJA
The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency Ltd (NAAJA) provides high-quality legal assistance and justice services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the Northern Territory.
With offices in Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, NAAJA is a nationally recognised legal service committed to protecting human rights, improving justice outcomes and creating long-term change through legal representation, law reform, education and community-led initiatives.
Our work is grounded in a commitment to justice, respect, cultural safety and better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families and communities.
About the role
Operating within NAAJA’s Throughcare and Justice Support Services, the Peacemaking Coordinator will be a key local coordination point for the development and delivery of community-led peacemaking responses in Central Australia.
You will work closely with the Apurte-le Mpwareme Partnership Governance Group (PGG) and support the establishment and ongoing development of the Apurte-le Mpwareme Peacemaking Service in Mparntwe/Alice Springs.
This role is about more than coordinating services. It is about building trust, strengthening partnerships, recognising cultural authority and supporting communities to respond to conflict in ways that promote accountability, restore relationships and prevent further harm.
You will help connect young people and families with appropriate supports, coordinate responses to emerging tensions, facilitate collaboration between stakeholders and contribute to community engagement activities that strengthen connection, cohesion and positive pathways for young people.
What you’ll be doing
- Coordinate community-led responses to youth-related conflict, retaliatory incidents, violence and emerging community safety concerns.
- Build strong community relationships with Aboriginal Elders, cultural authorities, families, young people, Aboriginal organisations and local leaders.
- Bring people together to support early intervention, conflict de-escalation, peacemaking and practical community-led solutions.
- Strengthen partnerships with government agencies, schools, youth services, community-controlled organisations and other key stakeholders.
- Support culturally grounded peacemaking processes that promote accountability, healing and the restoration of relationships.
- Represent NAAJA within the Apurte-le Mpwareme Partnership Governance Group and relevant stakeholder forums.
- Support community engagement through forums, harmony events and initiatives that encourage positive relationships and community cohesion.
- Identify emerging issues and service gaps and work collaboratively with partners to coordinate timely, informed responses.
- Contribute to service development through accurate reporting, record keeping, reflective practice and continuous improvement.
About you
You are a confident, culturally respectful and community-minded professional who understands the importance of listening, building trust and working alongside communities to achieve meaningful outcomes.
You bring strong relationship-building and communication skills, sound judgement and the ability to navigate sensitive situations with professionalism, discretion and care. You are comfortable coordinating multiple stakeholders, managing competing priorities and bringing diverse perspectives together to work towards shared goals.
You understand that effective peacemaking is grounded in local knowledge, cultural authority, community leadership and a commitment to solutions that work for the people involved.
Essential requirements
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- A strong understanding of Aboriginal culture, kinship systems, cultural authority and community dynamics.
- Highly developed relationship-building, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience coordinating community-based projects,
programs or responses involving multiple stakeholders.
- The ability to facilitate complex discussions, prevent conflict and support community-led outcomes.
- Experience working with Aboriginal young people, families and communities, with an understanding of youth offending, youth gang involvement and Aboriginal overrepresentation in the justice system.
- The ability to assess risk, exercise sound judgement and maintain ethical practice in complex and sensitive situations.
- Experience working collaboratively across community-controlled organisations, government agencies and other service providers.
- Strong organisational and administrative skills, including reporting and record keeping.
- A current Northern Territory C-class driver’s licence.
- The ability to obtain an Ochre Card upon commencement and satisfy the required criminal history and employment checks.
Desirable experience: Existing relationships and networks across Central Australia, Aboriginal language skills, or experience in mediation, restorative justice, peacemaking, youth work, community development or community safety partnerships will be highly regarded.
Why join NAAJA?
