Senior Solicitor or Senior Associate | Family Law
Family law is hard work. Your workplace shouldn't be.
Avokah Legal is a family-owned boutique that practises only family law, a few minutes from the Brisbane CBD on Logan Road, Woolloongabba. We help separating couples and parents resolve children's arrangements, property and everything in between: negotiating first, mediating where we can, and going to court when that is the right call for the client.
We are looking for a senior family lawyer to run their own practice, back our junior lawyers and help shape the firm as it grows. The title depends on your experience: Senior Solicitor or Senior Associate.
A note from Tayla Kilkeary, Director and Principal Solicitor
“I built Avokah to be the kind of firm I would want to work in. We look after our clients with honesty and care, and we look after each other the same way. I call our approach rubber handcuffs rather than golden ones: people stay because the firm works for their life, not because they are locked in. If you are a capable family lawyer who wants to be trusted, backed and properly rewarded, I would like to meet you.”
Why lawyers choose Avokah
A bonus you can actually earn, paid quarterly. Beat your individual fee target and receive 20% of the fees billed above it. If the firm also beats its target that quarter, you receive another 20% on top. No waiting until the end of the financial year.
Two days working from home each week, plus flexible start and finish times, so school runs, appointments and life fit around work, not the other way round.
Family first, in practice. We are a family-owned business and we run like one. Plenty of our team are working parents, and the way we work reflects that.
A Principal in your corner. Direct access to Tayla, no layers of management, and honest feedback that helps you grow.
Proper support. Dedicated administrative support, Smokeball practice management, managed IT and up-to-date legal resources, so your time goes on legal work.
A team that gets on. Quarterly team socials and team days, and a culture our people want to protect.
Paid CPD and career development, with real room to step up as the firm grows.
What you'll do
Run a varied family law practice from first meeting to final orders: parenting, property, combined matters, financial agreements and family violence matters
Resolve matters through negotiation and mediation where possible, and run proceedings in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia where needed
Give clear, practical advice to clients at one of the hardest points in their lives
Supervise, review and develop the work of junior solicitors and paralegals
Manage your own file load, fee target and time recording
Contribute to how the practice runs and grows, including building referral relationships
What you'll bring
Around five or more years' post-admission experience, mostly in family law
A current Queensland practising certificate, or eligibility to obtain one
Confidence running complex matters with minimal supervision, including in court
Experience mentoring or supervising junior lawyers, or a real appetite to do it well
Calm, clear and empathetic client management, and the backbone to be firm when it counts
Ownership of your numbers. We are upfront: there is a fee target and we record time daily. In return, when you beat the target, you share in it.
Accredited Family Law Specialist or NMAS-accredited mediator? Tell us. The top of the range is there for the right person.
Avokah Legal welcomes applications from people of all backgrounds. If you need any adjustments during the recruitment process, let us know and we will make them.
