Ecology Australia
Melbourne
Ecology Australia is Victoria’s longest-running ecological consultancy, established in 1978. We provide specialised ecological services across south-eastern Australia and are known for scientifically rigorous work, professional integrity and practical environmental advice. Our work bridges ecological consulting and applied research, with services spanning botany, zoology, aquatic ecology, monitoring and research, environmental approvals and GIS.
We are a friendly team of experienced ecologists and GIS professionals who work collaboratively to achieve positive environmental outcomes for government, corporate and community clients. We offer a flexible, supportive and enriching workplace, with accredited environmental, quality and safety systems and a strong commitment to staff development.
About the role
We are seeking a practical and detail-oriented GIS Analyst to support our ecologists with high-quality map production, spatial analysis, spatial dataset and database management, spatial data dashboards and fit-for-purpose mobile data collection solutions. Much of the role involves producing accurate, clear and consistent maps from ecological data, developing practical field-data collection tools and maintaining well-structured spatial datasets.
You will also help design and maintain ArcGIS Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps solutions for field surveys and ecological monitoring programs. The role will suit a GIS professional who understands how sound survey design, spatial data structure, quality assurance and reproducible workflows contribute to defensible ecological analysis and long-term monitoring.
Working closely with botanists, zoologists, aquatic ecologists and project managers,
you will translate project and research questions into practical spatial outputs. This may include mapping patterns and change through time, preparing data for analysis, undertaking spatial analysis, supporting monitoring design, and presenting spatial results for technical reports, management plans and environmental assessments.
Key responsibilities
- Produce high-quality maps and spatial outputs for ecological surveys, monitoring, applied research, environmental assessments and management plans.
- Create, test and maintain ArcGIS Survey123 and Field Maps solutions that support efficient and reliable ecological field-data collection.
- Manage, maintain and quality-check spatial and ecological datasets, including geodatabases, web maps and associated project data.
- Undertake spatial analysis and interpretation to support habitat and vegetation mapping, species surveys, ecological monitoring and assessment of change over time.
- Work collaboratively with ecologists to translate project, monitoring and research requirements into practical GIS solutions, maps and spatial outputs.
- Deliver accurate GIS work across multiple projects within agreed quality, timeframe and budget requirements, while contributing to consistent GIS and data-management practices.
About you
You will combine strong day-to-day GIS production skills with an understanding of how spatial tools are applied in ecology.
You will be comfortable collaborating with scientists, clarifying the purpose of a map or dataset, and developing proportionate solutions. You will take pride in accurate work, clear maps and other spatial data outputs that can be confidently used by others.
- Qualifications and experience: Relevant tertiary qualifications in GIS, spatial science, geomatics or cartography; or qualifications in ecology, environmental science or a related discipline with substantial GIS experience. At least two years’ relevant professional GIS experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Esri GIS capability: Demonstrated proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, including producing accurate, professional maps and managing spatial datasets.
- Survey123 and Field Maps: Demonstrated experience creating and administering ArcGIS Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps solutions, including designing forms and field workflows, testing solutions and managing collected data.
- Ecological and research applications: Experience applying GIS to ecological, environmental or research projects, including activities such as ecological monitoring, habitat or vegetation mapping, species data, survey design, spatial analysis or assessment of change over time.
- Spatial data management and quality: Demonstrated ability to manage, edit, document and quality-check spatial and ecological data, with solid attention to detail and a demonstrated understanding of reliable data-management practices.
- Communication and delivery: Strong communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively with ecologists and other project staff, manage competing priorities an
