We maintain an ongoing talent pool for current and upcoming ward opportunities across our surgical, medical and rehabilitation units, spanning specialty streams including neurosciences and spine, orthopaedics, cardiac, oncology and haematology, and general medical and rehabilitation. Inpatient nursing is where continuity of care happens, through multi-day recovery, complex discharge planning and the day-to-day work that shapes a patient's experience.
If you are an experienced Registered Nurse looking for a first step into an academic health precinct,
or seeking to consolidate your acute care practice in a specialty stream, we welcome your expression of interest.
About the Role
As a ward nurse at Macquarie University Health, you will care for patients recovering from complex surgery and for those managing acute and chronic medical conditions, in a precinct where clinical care, teaching and research operate side by side. Our inpatient units support specialty streams including neurosciences and spine, orthopaedics, cardiac, oncology and haematology, and general medical and rehabilitation, with scope for you to develop depth in the area that best matches your interests and experience.
Depending on your experience and the unit you are appointed to, your key areas of responsibility may include:
- Delivering comprehensive nursing assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation across the inpatient episode, in line with evidence-based practice and professional standards.
- Monitoring and responding to clinical deterioration, including observation and early warning score escalation, and contributing to rapid response processes.
- Providing post-operative and specialty care including wound and drain management, pain management, mobility support, neurological and cardiac observation, and oncology or haematology treatment support as relevant to the unit.
- Administering and managing medications safely, including intravenous therapy,
and maintaining accurate clinical documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Participating in admission, transfer, discharge planning and patient and carer education, working with allied health and community services to support safe transitions of care.
- Supporting students, new staff and colleagues in a teaching environment, and contributing to quality improvement, accreditation and professional development activities.
Opportunities arise at Registered Nurse level, and from time to time at senior and specialist levels. You are welcome to register your interest through this talent pool regardless of level. Please tell us the level, unit and specialty stream you are seeking in your cover letter.
Roster Information
Our inpatient units operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These roles involve rotating rosters across morning, afternoon and night shifts, including weekends and public holidays. We support a range of full-time, part-time and casual arrangements, and specific shift patterns, hours and line allocations will be confirmed for each opportunity.
