Cowwarr Primary School is situated approximately 186km east of Melbourne and 28km (26mins) North-East of Traralgon in the Latrobe Valley and 38km (30mins) west of Sale in Gippsland and resides in the Wellington Shire district. The town and surrounding area have an approximate population of 400.
Cowwarr Primary School is in the heart of Gippsland ¿The Middle of Everywhere¿, in the small town of Cowwarr. As a small school, we foster a close-knit, family-like atmosphere where students learn, grow, and play together in a supportive and nurturing environment. At Cowwarr, we embrace the belief that "Together Everyone Achieves More."
The school was established in 1877, and it has 24 students currently enrolled for. Our student enrolment fluctuates each year, ranging between 19 and 28 students over the past three years. The teaching team includes a full-time teaching Principal, one full-time teacher, and two part‑time teachers who lead specialist and tutoring programs across the school. Our staff is further supported by a part‑time Bursar (0.6) and four part‑time Integration Aides (ranging from 0.2 to 0.8 FTE).
In mid‑2021, a new school building was completed, featuring two classrooms, a general‑purpose room, and a gallery equipped with up-to-date technology to enhance our existing outdoor learning space and fully equipped kitchen (Cowfé). The school grounds include a spacious playground, sandpit, cubby house, vegetable garden, hot house, and a variety of fruit trees.
Students at Cowwarr Primary School have access to weekly specialist programs in the Arts, STEM, and Physical Education.
As part of the Sale Rural Cluster, our students benefit from collaborative opportunities, including participation in the MARC Van program and involvement in various sporting, social, and educational activities with other schools in the cluster throughout the year.
At Cowwarr, we view education as a collaborative partnership between the school, students, and families. We are dedicated to creating a supportive, safe, and inclusive learning environment that empowers students to develop their agency, voice, and self‑esteem. Our goal is to ensure that each student:
- Becomes a motivated, curious, and independent learner.
- Works towards and achieves personalised learning goals.
- Develops leadership skills to be a positive and contributing member of the school and wider community.
- Strengthens decision‑making, problem‑solving, and critical thinking abilities.
We believe that positive, quality relationships are essential to the success of our students. These relationships built with students, their families, and the broader community help create learning environments where self‑worth, confidence, independence, cooperation, and connectedness can flourish. The core values that guide the actions and behaviours of the Cowwarr School community are:
- Respect: For oneself, others, and the environment.
- Responsibility:
For actions and their consequences.
- Resilience: The perseverance to overcome challenges and achieve personal goals.
- Self‑Belief: Confidence in the future and the belief that individuals can achieve their goals.
Cowwarr Primary School is dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment where all students are empowered to reach their full potential. Trust, respect, and valuing others are fundamental beliefs that underpin our educational philosophy.
Our students develop a strong sense of belonging to the Cowwarr Team, where they are motivated to embrace learning, achieve personal excellence, and develop holistically, socially, emotionally, and physically. We are committed to delivering high‑quality education through consistent teaching practices across the school.
The success of Cowwarr Primary School is the result of a collective effort involving staff, students, parents, and the community.
