Their platform reaches millions of people every day. It’s live across multiple international markets with more launching, and major new enterprise brands are signing on. The next chapter is taking that platform into every international market, with continuous releases into each, on foundations that hold up at that scale. Following a successful rollout across the US, this role is the chance to take the platform into its next stage: building out the leadership and teams beneath you, and making sure the platform is robust enough to scale into Europe and Asia Pacific. You’d be maturing the function while it ships, setting the foundations for the next wave of growth.

The role at a glance:

- Senior Director, Engineering & Quality, reporting to the VP who leads the business’s largest global account
- A function of around 50 across Sydney and the US, with offshore squads across Asia and South America
- Three Directors reporting to you across Software Engineering, DevOps and QA, and data - Some of these seats you’ll hire yourself
- Seven squads in parallel on a full stack Node.js, TypeScript and React platform on AWS
- Releases every few weeks into live client environments, through the client’s own approval process

What you’ll own in the first 12 months:

- Quality and platform stability first - engineering-led test automation, release discipline and production health, so the platform is solid before it scales into new markets
- The engineering strategy for the international rollout
- Building your leadership team, and the culture and measures it runs on
- Being the senior engineering voice with the enterprise client,



including holding the line on what’s technically sensible

What we’re looking for - and we’ll be upfront, the bar is high:

- You came up as a developer and now lead engineering through other leaders. This isn’t a coding role. Your value is in the detail with your Directors: release quality, engineering maturity and how the function scales.
- You already work at Head of Engineering or Senior Director level, with Directors or managers of managers reporting to you.
- Breadth sits with you - engineering delivery, quality, architecture and production stability together - across multiple squads building client-facing product, ideally SaaS.
- Your customer has been an external client who pays for the product and shapes the roadmap. This is one of the first things explored.
- You’ve lifted the maturity of an engineering function while it was still shipping, ideally across a broad mix of technologies.
- Strong people leadership. You can talk through how you set expectations for your leaders, the KPIs you run a function on.
- You communicate clearly and concisely, and you’ll push back - on senior stakeholders, and on enterprise clients challenging your engineering practices.

This probably isn’t the right step if:

- Your remit is one part of a larger technology function, shared with peer Heads of Technology
- Your customers have been internal business units
- You manage the engineers or tech leads directly, and haven’t yet led a group of engineering managers who each run their own teams
- You’d still like to be in the code most days
