Our client, OZZY CRANES MANUFACTURING PTY LTD, trading as Ozzy Cranes Manufacturing, is a leading Australian engineering and industrial crane manufacturing specialist located at 61-75 Quanda Road, Coolum Beach QLD 4573. Renowned for its excellence in heavy industrial fabrication, crane engineering, and custom lifting solutions, the company designs, fabricates, and commissions high-capacity overhead travelling cranes, portal and semi-portal gantry cranes, jib cranes, and monorail systems across Queensland and nationally. Operating from a modern, fully equipped manufacturing facility, Ozzy Cranes Manufacturing delivers custom-engineered lifting equipment and heavy structural steel assemblies built to rigorous Australian Standards, including AS 1418 (Cranes, hoists and winches) and AS/NZS 1554 (Structural steel welding).
They are now seeking a qualified and experienced full-time Metal Fabricator to join their workshop production team in Coolum Beach, QLD. Reporting to the workshop manager and fabrication leads, the role is responsible for fabricating, cutting, shaping, assembling, and welding heavy structural steel components, crane girders, end carriages, and custom lifting equipment. The position requires strong technical proficiency in multi-process welding, blueprint reading, and structural steel fabrication, alongside a commitment to workplace safety and precision engineering.
This is a full-time, permanent position offering a competitive salary within the range of $75,000 to $85,000 AUD per annum, plus superannuation, benchmarked against market salary rates and commensurate with the technical skill, qualifications, and operational capability required for the role.
SCOPE OF THE ROLE:
- Studying engineering drawings, technical blueprints, and welding specifications to determine job requirements, material dimensions, and fabrication sequences for overhead cranes, gantry beams, and lifting structures.
- Selecting, inspecting, cleaning, and preparing structural steel plates, hollow sections, universal beams, and raw metal stock prior to cutting, assembly, and welding.
- Measuring, marking out, and cutting metal sections, plates, and structural components using precision measuring tools, oxy-fuel flame cutting torches, plasma cutters, and automated metal cutting machinery.
- Shaping, bending, and forming heavy steel sections and structural components using hydraulic press brakes, plate bending rolls, and machine/hand tools, including heating and mechanical manipulation.
- Aligning, positioning, clamping, and tack-welding parts and sub-assemblies using jigs, fixtures, clamps,
and precision measuring instruments (verniers, dial gauges, laser levels).
- Joining structural steel components, crane girders, and assemblies using various welding processes (including GMAW/MIG, FCAW, and GTAW/TIG) in all positions to meet AS/NZS 1554 structural welding standards.
- Examining and visually inspecting completed welds for bead width, penetration, alignment, and dimensional precision, ensuring defect-free structural integrity.
- Cleaning, dressing, and smoothing welds and cut edges using angle grinders, chisels, deburring tools, and filing equipment.
- Finishing fabricated steel assemblies through abrasive cleaning, surface preparation, polishing, and chemical surface treatments prior to blast and industrial protective coating.
- Operating workshop overhead gantry cranes, hoists, forklifts, and rigging gear safely to maneuver heavy steel plates, beams, and large-scale fabrications through the production line.
- Maintaining and enforcing strict Work Health and Safety (WHS) protocols, participating in toolbox talks, using appropriate PPE, and ensuring clean, orderly, and compliant workshop operations.
TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS ROLE, YOU SHOULD:
- Hold a relevant Australian qualification — Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Boilermaking/Welding), Certificate IV in Engineering, or equivalent recognized trade qualification (or overseas equivalent).
- Have at least 2 to 3 years of relevant post-qualification professional work experience as a Metal Fabricator, Boilermaker, or Welder within structural steel, heavy machinery, or industrial manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated multi-process welding expertise, particularly in GMAW (MIG), FCAW (Flux-Cored), and GTAW (TIG) across multiple welding positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead).
- High proficiency in blueprint reading, interpreting complex structural engineering drawings, geometric tolerances, and fabrication specifications.
- Hands-on experience in thermal cutting (flame/plasma), marking off, and operating fabrication machinery such as press brakes, guillotine shears, and radial drill presses.
- Sound working knowledge of Australian Standards for structural steel and welding (such as AS/NZS 1554 and AS 1418 for cranes) and strict WHS workshop compliance.
- Hold a valid White Card (General Construction Induction) and Australian driver licence; forklift or overhead crane operational tickets are highly regarded.
- Solid problem-solving abilities, physical stamina, and a collaborative team attitude with keen attention to detail and precision.
- Willingness to work on-site at the manufacturing facility in Coolum Beach, QLD.
- Must hold valid Australian work rights at the time of application.
