About SCMI The Sydney Chamber Music Institute (SCMI) is a new not-for-profit organisation dedicated to developing young chamber musicians through high-quality coaching and performance opportunities. Founded by Artistic Director Adele Okhi, SCMI brings together some of Sydney’s most respected musicians and educators. It held its launch concert in October 2026. Chamber music is where young musicians learn to think for themselves: to listen, to lead, and to make music without a conductor. SCMI exists to give talented top young musicians from every background, public and private schools alike, the chance to play side by side with Australia’s finest professionals, and to grow into confident, independent artists. Where we are SCMI is in its founding phase. It is currently completing registration as a company limited by guarantee. The inaugural board is establishing the organisation’s governance, financial and policy frameworks from the ground up. These include the constitution and core policies, including privacy and data management, financial controls and budgeting, insurance, and a strategic plan defining SCMI’s purpose, audience and value proposition. This is a rare chance to shape an arts organisation from its first day. It suits people who enjoy building structures and setting standards, and who are comfortable with the hands-on work an emerging organisation requires. Skills we are seeking The board already has strong artistic, educational and communications expertise. We are particularly seeking directors with:
• Finance and accounting: budgeting, financial reporting, controls and audit readiness,
including membership of the Finance & Risk Committee
• Governance and compliance: experience with ACNC and ASIC obligations, risk management or company secretarial practice
• Legal: not-for-profit, contracts or employment law (in a director capacity)
• Fundraising and partnerships: philanthropy, grants or corporate support What we ask
• A commitment to SCMI’s mission and to high standards of governance
• Attendance at six board meetings per year
• Membership of at least one committee. The Finance & Risk Committee meets quarterly, and other committees meet as required.
• Additional time during the establishment phase to help develop policies and systems
• A three-year term, in line with the SCMI constitution This is a voluntary, unpaid role. Directors’ and officers’ insurance will be in place before the board’s first formal meeting.
What we offer
• The opportunity to help shape a current organisation for young musicians in Sydney
• Work alongside an experienced Chair and a board of leading musicians and educators
• Governance experience in a supportive, collegial setting
