About the role
Imagine Accounting is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join our team and take responsibility for a portfolio of business clients across accounting, taxation, compliance and advisory matters.
This is a hands-on senior role similar to our existing Senior Accountant positions. The successful candidate will work closely with the Directors while becoming a key day-to-day contact for clients and taking ownership of progressing work from initial information gathering through to completion and Director review.
The role requires someone who can work independently, investigate accounting and taxation issues rather than simply process information, identify problems in client records, and communicate clearly with clients and the wider Imagine Accounting team.
Key responsibilities
Accounting and tax compliance
- Prepare annual financial statements and income tax returns for companies, trusts, partnerships and individuals.
- Prepare and review BAS, IAS and other periodic compliance obligations.
- Prepare tax reconciliations and supporting workpapers.
- Prepare and maintain Division 7A loan calculations and supporting schedules.
- Prepare tax planning calculations and year-end tax estimates.
- Review GST, PAYG withholding, payroll and superannuation accounts.
- Assist with FBT calculations, workpapers and returns.
- Review ATO integrated client accounts and income tax accounts and reconcile outstanding liabilities.
- Assist with ATO correspondence, amendments, payment arrangements and other client matters.
- Maintain technically sound and well-documented files suitable for Director review.
Financial accounting and review
- Review Xero files, general ledgers and trial balances and identify accounting issues requiring correction.
- Review bank, loan, payroll, superannuation, GST, fixed asset, inventory, suspense and related-party accounts.
- Investigate unusual or unreconciled balances rather than carrying them forward without explanation.
- Prepare journals and year-end adjustments.
- Review fixed asset registers and depreciation.
- Identify accounting errors, incomplete records and areas requiring further client information.
- Assist clients with improving the quality and accuracy of their accounting records.
Client management
- Act as a day-to-day contact for an allocated portfolio of clients.
- Build a detailed understanding of each client's business, structure and accounting requirements.
- Communicate directly with clients to obtain information and resolve accounting and taxation matters.
- Explain accounting and taxation issues to clients in clear language.
- Manage outstanding information requests and follow matters through to completion.
- Keep Directors informed of material issues, risks and matters requiring escalation.
- Coordinate with client bookkeepers, finance teams, lawyers and other external advisers where required.
Advisory and project work
Depending on experience, the Senior Accountant will also assist Directors with:
- Management accounts and financial reporting.
- Budgeting and forecasting.
- Cash flow analysis.
- Variance and profitability analysis.
- Business restructuring and entity establishment.
- Financial due diligence.
- Maintainable earnings and EBITDA analysis.
- Working capital analysis.
- Business acquisitions and disposals.
- Accounting system implementations and clean-ups.
- Client onboarding and finance-function improvement projects.
Systems
The successful candidate will be expected to become proficient across Imagine Accounting's practice systems,
including:
- Xero Accounting
- Xero Practice Manager (XPM)
- Xero HQ
- Xero Tax
- Xero Workpapers
- FYI Docs
- Ignition
- ATOmate
- NowInfinity
- Class
- Microsoft 365
- Microsoft Teams
- Microsoft Planner
- Adobe electronic signing tools
- ATO Online services
- ASIC registered agent systems
Training will be provided on firm-specific processes, but strong cloud-accounting and technology skills are expected.
Experience and capabilities
The preferred candidate will have:
- Solid Australian accounting and taxation experience in public practice.
- Experience preparing financial statements and income tax returns across companies, trusts, partnerships and individuals.
- Strong working knowledge of Australian GST, income tax and general business compliance requirements.
- Advanced Xero skills.
- Strong general ledger and reconciliation skills.
- The ability to investigate and resolve accounting issues independently.
- Experience dealing directly with clients.
- Strong written English and the ability to prepare clear client correspondence.
- Strong attention to detail and file documentation.
- The ability to manage multiple jobs and deadlines simultaneously.
- The judgement to recognise when an issue should be escalated to a Director.
Experience with management reporting, financial due diligence, restructuring or advisory work would be advantageous.
What success looks like
The Senior Accountant should progressively become capable of owning the day-to-day accounting and taxation requirements of an allocated client portfolio.
Directors should be able to rely on the Senior Accountant to progress work independently, identify issues before review, communicate directly with clients, maintain clean workpapers and files, and present substantially completed work for final Director review.
Pay: From $100,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
