House Steel Frame Pty Ltd at Salisbury, QLD, is looking for an experienced Carpenter to join the team. Australian owned and operated, the business designs, manufactures and supplies custom light gauge steel framing for residential and commercial construction, roll-forming wall frames, roof trusses, floor joists, ceiling and roof battens and structural steel to order from TrueCore BlueScope steel. Builders use the system because it arrives straighter, holds its dimensions and goes together faster than traditional timber framing. The service runs well past supply alone: every frame is detailed with the client and certified by a structural engineer before it is made, delivered to site on a scheduled run by the company’s own trucks, and, where the builder wants it, installed by its own carpenters working alongside the site supervisor, with component-marked plans and practical support before and after the install. Work comes from residential and commercial builders on projects across Australia, and the business sells on precision, quick turnaround and a framing system that cuts waste on site and lasts. You will join the crew that takes our client’s frames from the factory floor to the builder’s site: setting out, erecting and fixing off framing systems to the certified drawings, then finishing the job to the standard the business has built its name on. The week mixes installation work on site with preparation and pre-assembly in the workshop, and you will work closely with the detailing team, the delivery crew and the builders’ site supervisors.
CARPENTER | House Steel Frame Pty Ltd | Salisbury, QLD
Key Responsibilities
· Go through the engineer-certified frame and truss drawings with the detailing team before a job leaves the factory, reading the component-marked plan to work out which wall panels, trusses, joists and battens belong to each level and elevation, what fixings and tolerances the engineer has called for, and the order the frame will be stood up in on site.
· Set the job out on the builder’s slab or subfloor: pull the wall lines, openings and set-out points off the plan, check the slab dimensions, levels and squareness against the frame schedule before anything is stood up, and mark out the bottom plate fixing positions.
· Stand, plumb and brace the wall frames and fix the bottom plates down, land the floor joists and lay the sub-flooring and floorboards, then lift the roof trusses into place, space and tie them off and run the ceiling and roof battens, string-lining as you go so the structure is true to the certified drawing before anything is fixed off.
· Fix fascia and barge boards, sheath and batten out the roof, hang the exterior wall cladding onto the frame, and set door and window frames plumb and square into their openings ready for the builder’s following trades.
· Cut materials to size in the workshop and on site, make up the bearers, noggings, trimmers and lintel supports a job calls for, cut the timber joints where conventional carpentry ties into the steel system, and assemble and nail the cut and shaped parts into position.
· Pre-assemble prepared timber into finished structures and fittings in the Salisbury workshop so they travel to site complete and go straight in, keeping the crew’s time on the builder’s floor as short as possible.
· Put together the materials list for each job and order the timber, steel sections, fixings, bracing and consumables it needs, select stock against the component schedule, and check every load off the company trucks for short supply or transit damage before the crew starts.
· Fit the system the way it is engineered to go together:
swaged stud connections pulled up tight, galvanised M6 screws driven and recessed into the dimpled connections, K-bracing installed to the engineer’s layout and pre-punched service holes left explicit for the following trades. Work with metals, plastic laminates and perspex on fit-out items where a job calls for them.
· Build and strip formwork for concrete footings, pads and slab edges where a job calls for it, and carry out repairs, alterations and making-good to existing framing, fittings and finishes on extension, renovation and post-installation callback work.
· Work in with the builder’s site supervisor so the installation fits the site programme, give the builder the pre-installation and post-installation support the business offers, and refer anything that does not sit right back to the detailing team rather than cutting a certified frame to suit on site.
· Unload and stage frames, trusses and battens in the sequence the installation will follow, work safely at heights and in the workshop, look after the hand and power tools you use, and help bring apprentices and newer crew members up to speed on the system.
Education and Experience
· At least 1 year of relevant carpentry experience.
· An AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or an AQF Certificate IV in a relevant field.
Personal attributes
· Accurate and methodical, with a good eye for line, level and square.
· Reliable and punctual, and able to keep an installation to programme.
· Takes pride in a safe, tidy and well-finished job.
Salary & Hours
· Permanent position, full-time, 38 hours per week.
· $75,000 to $85,000 plus superannuation per annum.
If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you! Please be sure to combine a covering letter addressing the key criteria set out above as the first page of your resume.
