Casual Kennel Attendant – Full-Time Hours | Boarding Kennel
Please read the entire job description before applying. This is a physically demanding, fast-paced cleaning role. If you are looking for a job where you simply get to play with dogs all day, this position is not for you.
We are looking for a reliable, hardworking and physically fit Kennel Attendant with a minimum of one year of experience working in a boarding kennel environment.
This position is strictly within our boarding kennel department. You will not be working in our daycare department.
We want someone who understands the realities of kennel work. This is a demanding job that requires constant movement, physical effort, attention to detail and the ability to maintain a quick working pace throughout the day.
Our team works hard, and everyone is expected to hustle, stay productive and give their best effort regardless of the task. We need someone who understands that kennel work is not always glamorous and that cleaning is one of the most important responsibilities in maintaining the health, hygiene and wellbeing of the dogs in our care.
If you are not prepared for hours of physical cleaning and power washing, please do not apply.
Employment Type and Working Hours
Employment type: Casual employment with consistent, full-time hours.
Regular shifts: Monday to Friday, 6:30 am – 2:00 pm.
You are expected to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled shift, meaning you must arrive at 6:20 am, ready to begin work so that you are out working in the kennels by 6:30 am.
Being punctual and ready to work at the scheduled start time is essential. Our daily cleaning routine starts early, and the team relies on everyone being ready to get straight into the workload.
This position involves working five days per week, Monday to Friday, and maintaining a consistent level of effort throughout each shift.
Probationary Period and Potential Permanent Employment
All new employees will undertake an initial three-month probationary period. During this time, we will assess your reliability, work ethic, cleaning standards, ability to maintain the required pace and overall suitability for the role.
We expect team members to demonstrate a strong work ethic, take direction well, work efficiently and consistently meet the physical demands of the position.
After three months, if you have demonstrated that you are a reliable, hardworking and suitable member of our team, the opportunity to discuss a transition to permanent full-time employment may be considered.
Please understand that permanent full-time employment is not guaranteed and will depend on your performance, suitability for the role and the needs of the business.
We are looking for someone who takes this opportunity seriously and wants to establish themselves as a dependable, long-term member of our team.
About the Role
The majority of this position involves heavy-duty kennel cleaning, including extensive power washing.
Cleaning is the foundation of this role. It is physically demanding, repetitive and time-sensitive, and you must be prepared to work hard for extended periods.
Our kennel cleaning routine involves two main areas:
- Area 1: Approximately 7:00 am – 12:00 pm.
- Area 2: Approximately 7:00 am – 2:00 pm.
These cleaning routines involve hours of power washing, scrubbing and maintaining kennel areas to our required hygiene standards.
You will spend most of your day on your feet, walking quickly between tasks, handling cleaning equipment and maintaining a consistent pace. The work requires physical stamina, focus and the ability to keep going even when the tasks are repetitive and tiring.
You must understand that this is not a job where you can take your time completing tasks. We have a substantial daily workload, and everyone needs to work efficiently to ensure the kennels are cleaned properly and on schedule.
Cleaning is the primary responsibility of this position, not an occasional duty.
Training and Progression
Your first two weeks will be dedicated entirely to cleaning.
During this time, you will learn our cleaning procedures, equipment requirements, hygiene standards and expectations for completing tasks efficiently.
Before being assigned additional responsibilities, you must demonstrate that you can clean thoroughly, work independently and maintain the required pace.
Once you are competent in cleaning, you may be assigned to boarder exercising duties. These include:
- Supervising boarding dogs while they exercise in the yard.
- Monitoring dogs and helping maintain a safe environment.
- Taking photos of dogs for our social media.
- Following our procedures and ensuring dogs are appropriately supervised.
However, being trained in boarder exercising does not mean you stop cleaning.
Even after you are fully trained, you will still be required to complete cleaning duties at least three times per week. Cleaning remains a core and ongoing responsibility of this role.
Please do not apply if your main interest is exercising dogs or taking photos. These duties are additional responsibilities, and cleaning will continue to make up a significant part of your working week.
What We Are Looking For
The successful applicant must:
- Have a minimum of one year of experience in a boarding kennel environment.
- Be physically fit and capable of performing repetitive, demanding cleaning duties for extended periods.
- Be comfortable spending several hours power washing and cleaning kennels.
- Be able to walk quickly,
remain on their feet throughout the day and maintain a consistent working pace.
- Be hardworking, proactive and able to work efficiently without constant supervision.
- Be reliable, punctual and ready to begin work at 6:30 am.
- Have a strong work ethic and take pride in completing tasks properly.
- Be comfortable working with dogs of different sizes, temperaments and energy levels.
- Follow instructions, workplace procedures and animal safety protocols.
- Be willing to undertake cleaning duties regularly, even after learning other aspects of the role.
- Understand that every team member is expected to contribute and maintain the pace required to get the daily workload completed.
Our Working Environment
We operate in a fast-paced environment where everyone needs to pull their weight.
We do not have time for team members who consistently work slowly, need constant reminders to stay on task or only put effort into the parts of the job they enjoy.
Whether you are power washing kennels, scrubbing floors, moving equipment, completing other cleaning tasks or supervising dogs in the yard, we expect you to work with urgency, purpose and a consistent level of effort.
This is not a relaxed workplace where tasks can be completed whenever you feel like getting around to them. Our daily workload is substantial, and the team relies on everyone doing their part.
We understand that kennel cleaning is hard work. That is precisely why we want applicants to understand the expectations before applying. We value people who turn up on time, work hard, take pride in their work and understand that excellent animal care starts with excellent hygiene.
Before You Apply
Please honestly consider whether this role is suited to you.
- Are you comfortable spending several hours power washing and cleaning kennels?
- Can you maintain a fast and consistent pace throughout a physically demanding day?
- Are you prepared to be on your feet and moving for most of your shift?
- Can you reliably work Monday to Friday, 6:30 am – 2:00 pm, and arrive at 6:20 am ready to start?
- Are you happy to spend most of your working hours cleaning rather than playing with or interacting with dogs?
- Do you understand that cleaning will remain a regular part of your role, even after training?
- Are you comfortable starting as a casual employee with consistent full-time hours, with the possibility of discussing permanent full-time employment after three months?
If you answered yes to these questions and have the required boarding kennel experience, we encourage you to apply.
We are looking for someone who is genuinely prepared to work hard, maintain high standards and contribute positively to a hardworking team every single day.
Please apply only if you understand the physical demands and expectations of this position and are confident that you can meet them.
