About Us
Western Meat Packers is a family-run meat processing business that has operated since 1983 with operations across meat processing, packing, cold storage, and distribution.
Our Cowaramup operation is a class-leading beef abattoir and processing facility located in Western Australia’s Southwest. The site operates within a complex and highly regulated environment, supported by dedicated production, maintenance, quality assurance, work health and safety, livestock, and operational teams.
About the role
Western Meat Processors are seeking a motivated and experienced Maintenance 2IC to join the team at our Cowaramup operations. This is a newly created permanent, full-time opportunity offering long-term job security, a supportive team environment, and the chance to play a key role in maintaining and improving our production facilities.
We are looking for a hands-on maintenance professional with strong leadership qualities who can work independently, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and support production requirements when needed.
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring plant and equipment reliability through preventative and corrective maintenance activities while minimising production downtime. This role requires participation in an on-call roster and a willingness to support operational requirements across the site.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out preventative maintenance activities in accordance with scheduled maintenance programs.
- Minimise unplanned production downtime through effective troubleshooting and repairs.
- Support the maintenance team during plant and equipment breakdowns.
- Provide suggestions and advice where operational improvements and cost-saving opportunities can be identified.
- Assist with technical information, knowledge sharing, and diagnostic support.
- Ensure machinery pre-start procedures are completed daily and take corrective action where required.
- Support the safe and efficient operation of site equipment and infrastructure.
- Participate in the site's call-out and Saturday rosters.
- Work collaboratively with production teams to achieve operational objectives.
Safety and Food-Processing Requirements
Safety is a critical part of every maintenance activity at Western Meat Packers. You will be expected to:
- Follow all workplace health and safety policies, procedures, and reasonable directions.
- Comply with Lock Out/Tag Out, equipment isolation, permit, and risk-control requirements.
- Never undertake electrical, mechanical, or other licensed trade work unless appropriately qualified and authorised.
- Correctly use and care for the personal protective equipment provided.
- Follow food safety, hygiene and quality assurance requirements when working in production areas.
- Report hazards, incidents, near misses and damaged equipment promptly.
- Participate in toolbox meetings, safety activities, and required training.
What the Working Environment Is Like
This is a hands-on maintenance role within an operating meat-processing facility. Before applying,
candidates should understand that the work may involve:
- Working in and around active production areas and industrial machinery.
- Exposure to raw meat products and the sights and smells of a commercial meat-processing facility.
- Working in chilled, wet, noisy, or outdoor areas depending on the maintenance task.
- Wearing food-production clothing and task-specific personal protective equipment.
- Standing, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling while performing maintenance activities.
- Completing practical and sometimes dirty or physically demanding work.
- Responding to changing priorities when equipment breakdowns affect production.
About you
- Previous leadership in maintenance, manufacturing, engineering, construction, mechanical or workshop environments with the ability to positively influence others.
- Practical mechanical aptitude.
- Excellent problem-solving and fault-finding skills
- A proactive approach to maintenance and continuous improvement
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Experience within food production, meat processing or another industrial setting will be advantageous, but is not essential.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence
You will also hold:
- A current forklift licence
- Working at Heights certification
- Confined-space training
- Current Australian Driver’s Licence
Holding a relevant Electrical licence/qualification will also be highly regarded.
So, if you are a trade-qualified maintenance professional looking for a long-term opportunity with a dynamic and growing organisation, we would love to hear from you.
