What does it take to modernize critical backend infrastructure for aleading Australian banking and financial services organization?
Join an enterprise engineering squad working on a large-scaleOpen Banking and mobile platform ecosystem, helping transition traditional batch processing toward real-time data processing and building resilient services that support millions of customers.
You'll work acrossGo, Temporal, PostgreSQL, gRPC, Protocol Buffers, AWS, and Kubernetes, helping modernize core backend services while collaborating closely with engineering teams and enterprise stakeholders.
The first2–4 weeks may require onsite work in Melbourne, Australiafor context, knowledge sharing, and stakeholder alignment.
Candidates must be open to this initial onsite commitment and have, or be able to explore, the appropriate Australian working visa options.
Melbourne-based candidates open to a longer-term hybrid engagement are especially desirable.
The Role
Backend Engineering & Architecture:Lead the design, development, and modernization of highly scalable backend services usingGo or Java, with a focus on high-concurrency, distributed, and production-critical systems.
Workflow Orchestration:Build and maintain durable workflows usingTemporal or equivalent workflow orchestration frameworks, supporting long-running processes, retries, state management, and fault-tolerant execution.
APIs & Data Platforms:Design and optimizePostgreSQLschemas and queries while building robustgRPC and Protocol BuffersAPIs for distributed backend services.
Real-Time & Cloud Modernization:Help transition traditional batch architectures toward real-time polling, event-driven processing, or streaming,
leveragingAWS, Kubernetes, and EKSto deliver resilient cloud-native services.
Security, Reliability & Operations:Build secure enterprise services with strong practices around vulnerability management, automated security scanning, patching, testing, observability, and production reliability.
Technical Leadership & Collaboration:Drive architectural decisions, mentor engineers, troubleshoot complex production challenges, and collaborate directly with engineering teams and client stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions.
The "Must-Haves"
5+ years of senior backend engineering experiencewith solid proficiency inGoor Java, particularly in high-concurrency and distributed systems.
Production experience withTemporal or equivalent durable workflow orchestration frameworksfor long-running, stateful, and fault-tolerant processes.
Strong experience withPostgreSQL, including schema design and query optimization, plus deep experience withgRPC and Protocol Buffers.
Experience modernizing batch architectures towardreal-time data polling, event-driven processing, or streaming, with production experience inAWS, Kubernetes, or EKS.
Experience buildingsecure, resilient enterprise backend servicesand willingness to work onsite inMelbourne for the first 2–4 weeks,
with appropriate Australian work authorization or a viable visa pathway.
The "Bonus" Skills
Experience infinancial services, Open Banking, OAuth2 consent management, financial APIs, or secure transaction processing.
Experience withTerraform, Helm, Snyk, automated vulnerability scanning, security patching, or enterprise DevOps practices.
Hands-on experience withHashiCorp Vaultfor secrets management orLaunchDarklyfor feature flags and progressive rollouts.
Familiarity withmobile synchronization, client-side caching, offline-first architectures, SQLite, or highly resilient distributed systems.
Exposure toAWS and GCP, along with strong shift-left testing, automation, and security practices.
Technical Leader at Heart:Confident making architectural decisions, guiding engineers, and raising the technical bar across the team.
Hands-On Problem Solver:Enjoys diving into complex backend, distributed systems, and production challenges to find practical and scalable solutions.
Reliability-Focused:Prioritizes resilience, scalability, security, observability, and operational excellence when building production systems.
Security-Conscious:Takes ownership of secure engineering practices, proactive risk reduction, automated testing, and continuous improvement.
Strong Communicator:Comfortable working directly with engineers, technical leaders, and enterprise stakeholders, translating complex technical decisions clearly.
Collaborative & Pragmatic:Takes ownership, adapts to changing priorities, and works effectively in a fast-paced enterprise environment while enabling the wider team to succeed.
