Company Description OnyX specializes in transforming complex energy concepts into bankable, delivery-ready assets across renewable generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), AI data centre power, and EV charging networks. The organization focuses on bridging technical innovation with commercial viability, helping clients deploy reliable and scalable clean energy solutions. OnyX operates at the intersection of engineering, finance, and project delivery, offering end-to-end support from design through implementation. Team members collaborate on projects that enable the transition to low-carbon infrastructure and advanced power systems, contributing to sustainable energy outcomes for diverse clients. Role Description Are you an electrical engineer who enjoys both hands-on technical work and seeing how your decisions influence an entire project? At OnyX, you will work directly with our directors, specialist consultants and equipment suppliers to progress solar and battery energy storage projects—from identifying viable sites and developing electrical concepts through to grid connection, engineering coordination and procurement. We are looking for a capable, practical engineer who can contribute to active projects quickly, take ownership of technical workstreams and help strengthen our internal engineering capability. Previous engineering consultancy experience will be highly regarded.
Key Responsibilities
• Electrical design and drafting: Prepare and review AutoCAD drawings, single-line diagrams (SLDs), equipment layouts and electrical system configurations, supported by appropriate calculations and design assumptions.
• Grid connection: Manage connection enquiries, applications and technical correspondence with Network Service Providers (NSPs), keeping submissions, requirements and deadlines on track.
• Consultant and grid-modelling coordination: Scope, coordinate and review work undertaken by engineering consultants,
grid-modelling specialists and OEMs; identify gaps and drive outstanding technical issues toward resolution.
• Feasibility and due diligence: Assess sites, network information and project documentation to identify constraints, test assumptions and recommend practical development pathways.
• Equipment and project engineering: Evaluate battery, PCS/inverter, transformer and switchgear solutions; support design optimization, technical procurement and EPC interfaces.
• Research and communication: Turn technical information and complex datasets into clear reports, recommendations and project records that support sound decisions. You will undertake engineering work yourself while coordinating specialist support where required. You do not need to personally perform every specialist modelling study, but you must be able to understand the inputs, question the assumptions and manage the deliverables. Qualifications Your background should include:
• A degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline, with relevant experience in renewable energy, power systems or electrical infrastructure.
• Hands-on AutoCAD capability and experience producing SLDs and electrical drawings, rather than reviewing them only.
• A practical understanding of Australian grid connection processes, with experience contributing to NSP applications, technical submissions or connection workstreams.
• Sound electrical engineering fundamentals, including HV/MV systems, equipment sizing, transformers, switchgear and protection.
• Strong analytical,
research and written communication skills, with the ability to coordinate stakeholders and manage competing deadlines. Experience in an engineering consultancy, renewable energy developer, EPC contractor or network business would be relevant.
• Solar/BESS experience, Chapter 5 or Chapter 5A connections, power-system studies, protection, SCADA and plant controls will be valued. Familiarity with tools such as PowerFactory, PSS/E, PSCAD, SINCAL, ETAP, PVsyst or GIS is advantageous; expertise in every package is not expected. Our Culture We value ownership, curiosity, clear communication and reliable delivery. You will suit OnyX if you enjoy investigating unfamiliar problems, can distinguish verified facts from assumptions, and raise risks early with a practical recommendation. You should be comfortable asking questions, receiving feedback and working with colleagues to improve the outcome. We welcome people who explore AI, automation and new tools to improve research, analysis and productivity—while checking outputs carefully and protecting confidential information. Our approach is high trust, low bureaucracy and clear accountability. We value sound judgment, helpful progress and quality work—not unnecessary process or the appearance of being busy. Ownership also means recognizing when specialist advice or a second review is needed.
How to Apply
Apply through your CV to
[email protected] and a brief introduction describing one relevant project or engineering workstream you personally delivered. Tell us what you produced, a technical challenge you resolved, and your experience with electrical drawings, NSPs or specialist consultants. Please include your notice period or earliest available start date. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. We are keen to appoint the right person promptly and welcome candidates who can contribute to current projects early.
