About the opportunity

As a Casual Sessional Academic (Tutor), you will contribute to the delivery of SOCO courses with support, guidance and direction from the Course Convenor and School staff.

You will work both independently and collaboratively to foster active, evidence-based learning, motivate students to achieve their best and support them in meeting course learning outcomes.

Applicants should possess qualifications and/or relevant professional experience appropriate to the discipline area. A demonstrated ability to engage and educate students, along with a collaborative approach to teamwork, is highly valued.

Tutoring qualifications are highly regarded. If you have not recently completed tutor training offered by the College, you will be required to undertake this professional development. Successful applicants will be advised of the dates, likely around O-Week.

Casual Sessional Academic roles at ANU are non-ladder positions and are not eligible for participation in the academic promotions process.

About the School

Our mission is motivated by the need to design, drive and sustain strategic activities via five broad focus areas: Computing Foundations, Computational Science, Intelligent Systems, Data Science and Analytics,

Be part of an cutting-edge and forward-looking intellectual agenda, built on a diverse, inclusive culture.

About the College

As one of the great universities of the world, ANU is driven by a culture of excellence in everything we do. Our lived experience is increasingly one of large-scale systems of people, whose actions and interactions are influenced by our digital, physical and biological environment. The ANU College of Systems and Society (CSS) hosts many of the key disciplines necessary to help us design, build, regulate and secure the future.

CSS brings together expertise in social, technical, computational, ecological and scientific systems to build a new approach to systems design and build recent national capabilities in data-driven policy and business development.

The work we do in the College is to strengthen our national mission and meet our unique responsibilities as Australia’s national university. We will deliver on our mission by building a strong community, providing transformative educational experiences, conducting high-impact research, seeking meaningful engagement and becoming a resilient organisation.

We welcome and openly acknowledge differences in expertise, research, education, qualified focus, experience and perspective.

CSS is a vibrant and diverse community of more than three thousand students, staff and visitors. Our College is comprised of the School of Computing, School of Cybernetics, School of Engineering, Fenner School of Environment & Society, Mathematical Sciences Institute and the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, supported by the Skilled Services Group.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants for Casual Sessional Academic (CSA) tutoring or demonstrating roles must meet the applicable academic qualification or professional experience equivalence requirements for the course(s) they are seeking to teach.

Eligibility will be assessed against the specific course and course level, not simply on whether an applicant is generally qualified to tutor.

Applicants may meet the academic eligibility requirement through one or more of the following pathways:

- Relevant completed qualification: A completed qualification in a relevant discipline at least one AQF level higher than the course being taught.
- Relevant qualification at the same level: A completed qualification, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline at the same AQF level as the course, together with appropriate professional development and supervision.
- Exceptional academic achievement: For eligible 1XXX–3XXX and 6XXX–7XXX level courses, demonstrated achievement of the relevant learning outcomes to an exceptional level, normally evidenced by a High Distinction (HD) in the relevant course or equivalent study, as determined by the School.
- Current doctoral candidature: Current PhD/doctoral candidates may be eligible where the proposed teaching is within or sufficiently related to their area of doctoral study.
