The College is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable English Teacher for a temporary 12-month appointment in 2027.
Within the English department, language and literature are seen to be at the heart of a sound liberal education. Great emphasis is placed on developing skills in, and a love for, English. Canonical, diverse, and contemporary literature are explored across the English program, with opportunities for class-based patterns of study. Teachers are expected to teach writing in both embedded and direct ways, and there is a solid and sustained Wide Reading Program in place from Years 7 to 10.
Our students enjoy the rigour of studying English. The College offers Senior students the option of either the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC), and our student enrolment in English Extension 1 and 2 has grown significantly in the past three years. Additionally, from 2024, Year 10 students have the option to study IGCSE Literature in English.
At Newington, there is an emphasis on critical and creative thinking, where teachers look to build positive classroom environments that foster a passion for the subject.
