Job Description

About Amber

Amber is an entirely current way to buy and sell power, designed for a world powered by renewable energy. We give customers direct access to the real‑time wholesale electricity price as it varies every 5 mins and the technology to shift more of their energy usage to the times when cheaper renewables are available in the grid. It’s a cheaper way to buy power, a smarter way to sell power, and the fastest way for Australia to reach 100% renewable energy.

We are a clear category leader in Australia for home battery automation and are growing rapidly (close to 100k customers). We have also recently expanded into licensing our core technology to utilities overseas, including a partnership with E.ON Next in the UK. Amber is backed by leading Australian and international investors including Square Peg, Main Sequence, Breakthrough Victoria, Commonwealth Bank, NRMA, Gentrack, ETF Partners and E.ON Next.

Most recently, Amber raised a $78.5 million Series E, led by 1GT, Morgan Stanley Investment Management’s climate tech fund, alongside participation from existing investors. We are scaling rapidly and you’d be joining a team of over 250 committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and purpose‑driven culture as we transform a major industry.

About The Role

The Senior Risk and Trading Analyst is the analytical and commercial engine behind Amber’s hedging program. The role supports the entire trading lifecycle: forecasting, pricing and risk, position management, trade execution and environmental compliance. It owns the demand and price scenario models that determine how much Amber hedges, with which instruments and at what residual risk,

and works closely with the Senior Hedging Manager to turn that analysis into executed trades within delegated authority and approved risk limits.

Amber passes real‑time wholesale electricity prices through to customers, which creates unusual hedging and risk dynamics, including the Price Protection Guarantee, alongside more conventional challenges such as environmental certificate price risk. This is a data‑heavy role for someone who enjoys building models from first principles on granular customer level data and defending the answer in front of senior stakeholders.

This is an important role that requires strong commercial decision‑making, keeping risk at front and centre. It suits an all‑rounder who has spent time in risk and analytics teams with a trading focus. You would need to have an in‑depth understanding of the NEM, and the ability to contribute to three areas where you will be a SME: Trading, Data Analytics and Environmental Markets.

Role Expectation

60% BAU and 40% special/ad‑hoc projects within the first 12 months while scaling occurs.

Key Responsibilities Trading

- Trade electricity and environmental products, including financial derivatives
- Execute and monitor trades via ASX Energy, OTC and broker channels, within delegated trading authority.
- Manage Amber’s energy and environmental positions day to day: monitor hedge coverage against forecast load across NEM regions (NSW, VIC, QLD, SA), identify over‑ and under‑hedged positions,

and act on them.
- Use the demand and price scenarios to determine the distribution of shape factors across Amber’s customer base.
- Determine the impact of the hedge book on retail pricing decision.
- Analyse forward price curves and contract‑for‑difference (CfD) exposures
- Support the trade lifecycle after execution, including trade capture, confirmation, settlement and reconciliation.

Analytics

- Maintain, back‑test and continually improve operational models, documenting assumptions, limitations and version history. Build and automate data pipelines, reporting and dashboards (in Python or R and Snowflake) so that analysis is repeatable.
- Analyse historical customer load profiles and their relationship with wholesale electricity price, temperature, time and other key variables.
- Produce and maintain load forecasts at customer and regional level, allowing for customer growth, churn and changes in customer behaviour.
- Run sensitivity analysis to manage impacts of load and price variability on hedging strategy.
- Define and quantify Amber’s residual risk under the proposed hedging strategy across a range of average wholesale price, volatility and demand scenarios.
- Forecast future prudential capital requirements under a range of scenarios, after the proposed hedging strategy has been implemented.
- Produce regular position reporting covering hedge cover, exposure, mark‑to‑market and limit utilisation.

Retail pricing

- Set the cost drivers for the wholesale components (hedging, environmental, customer load) that drive retail pricing, and support the build up of retail tariffs for all regions.
- Assess the cost and risk of custo
