When working in the VAAC, tasks involve monitoring several hundred volcanoes for eruptions within one of the most geologically active regions on the planet and issuing advisories and providing briefings to allow aircraft to avoid dangerous volcanic ash plumes. HWU meteorologists will also engage in periodic SIGMET collaboration trials with neighbouring National Meteorological and Hydrological Service agencies and add local expertise with input to the World Area Forecast Centre predictions across the Australian domain.
