Flexible working arrangements | Salary negotiable based on experience
Looking for a change from public practice or your next opportunity in commercial accounting?
We are seeking an experienced, motivated and hands-on Accountant to join our established regional Victorian business operating across transport and agricultural products, while also supporting the group's external primary production operations.
This is an excellent opportunity for an accountant with commercial or management accounting experience, or an experienced tax and business services accountant looking to transition from public practice into an industry role.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day accounting, bookkeeping and payroll functions, while also providing financial reporting and support to the management team.
We are looking for someone who enjoys being involved in all aspects of accounting, is comfortable working independently and takes ownership of their responsibilities.
Located just outside of Rochester, we are 20 minutes from the thriving river town of Echuca. For anyone ready to leave the city commute behind, there is a better way to live. Choose Rochester, Echuca or somewhere in between; providing access to high-quality schools, healthcare, services, cultural and sporting facilities.
About the role
This is a varied, hands-on position offering exposure to multiple business activities and opportunities to contribute to the group's financial and operational performance.
Key responsibilities include:
Accounting and bookkeeping
- Manage day-to-day bookkeeping and accounting functions using MYOB.
- Process and oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable and bank reconciliations.
- Maintain accurate general ledger records, including journals, accruals and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Manage financial transactions and reconciliations across the group's various business activities and entities.
- Assist with cash flow management and debtor and creditor reporting.
Payroll and compliance
- Prepare and process payroll, including employee entitlements,
leave and superannuation.
- Manage payroll reporting and associated compliance obligations, including STP.
- Prepare and lodge BAS and assist with GST, PAYG and other taxation obligations.
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
- Work with external accountants on year-end financial statements, taxation and compliance matters.
Management accounting and reporting
- Prepare monthly financial reports, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets and supporting management reports.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting and cash flow planning.
- Analyse operating costs, margins and profitability across the group's business activities.
- Provide practical financial information to assist management with business and operational decisions.
- Support financial reporting and accounting requirements for the group's external primary production operations.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, systems and internal controls.
About you
We are looking for a practical, capable and reliable accountant who enjoys being hands-on while also understanding the importance of accurate financial reporting.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience using MYOB – essential.
- Experience in commercial accounting, management accounting or public practice.
- Robust bookkeeping skills and an understanding of day-to-day accounting processes.
- Experience preparing and processing payroll, including superannuation and employee entitlements.
- Sound knowledge of Australian taxation and compliance requirements, particularly GST, BAS and PAYG.
- Strong Excel skills and the ability to prepare and interpret financial reports.
- Excellent attention to detail, organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Confidence working independently, while maintaining a collaborative relationship with the management team.
- A proactive approach, willingness to take ownership and the ability to identify and resolve issues.
An accounting qualification or CA/CPA membership would be highly regarded, although practical experience and suitability for the role are equally important.
Experience in transport, agricultural products, inventory management or primary production would be advantageous but is not essential.
Considering a move from public practice?
If you are an experienced tax or business services accountant looking for a change, this could be an ideal opportunity to apply your skills in a commercial workplace.
Your experience with financial statements, taxation, bookkeeping and business clients will provide a strong foundation for this role.
You will have the opportunity to become more involved in the day-to-day operations of a business and work directly with management to understand and improve its financial performance.
What we offer
- Flexible working arrangements, depending on the successful candidate's circumstances and alignment with business requirements.
- A diverse and interesting accounting role across transport, agricultural products and primary production operations.
- The opportunity to work closely with an approachable management team and have a meaningful impact on business operations.
- A balance of practical accounting responsibilities and management reporting.
- Autonomy and ownership of the accounting function, with support from management and external advisers as required.
- Competitive remuneration negotiated based on experience and qualifications.
We understand that finding the right person is important and are open to discussing flexible working arrangements to suit the successful candidate and the business.
