About us

Retain by Theo is a family-owned business based in the Illawarra, run by husband & wife team Theo and Jade. We specialise in engineered retaining walls, along with landscaping, carpentry and decking, on residential and small development projects across the Illawarra with expansion into the Sutherland Shire and Nowra. Most of our work comes through referrals and repeat clients, and we're proud of our workmanship.

The role

We're looking for two keen junior apprentice landscapers to join our onsite team. You'll complete a Certificate III in Landscape Construction (AHC30921) at TAFE NSW course currently running through Yallah Tafe ( Albion Park) while learning on the job with Theo and his team, Theo who has over 15 years of hands-on experience in retaining walls, landscaping, construction and machinery operation.

Your training

- Certificate III in Landscape Construction at TAFE NSW Yallah (138 Marshall Mount Road Albion Park), about 20 minutes from Wollongong, with free parking
- One day a week at TAFE with the rest of your week on the job with the team.
- A 3–4 year apprenticeship, with TAFE training over 3 years, government subsidised, with fee-free places for eligible apprentices
- Units include retaining wall projects, drainage systems, concrete landscape features and stone structures, the same work we do every day

You'll get hands-on with:
- Concrete sleeper, timber, block and masonry retaining walls
- Excavation and site preparation,



including working around excavators and machinery
- Drainage, backfilling and compaction
- Paving, turf, garden beds and general landscaping
- Fencing, decking and finishing works

About you

- Keen to learn a trade and build a long-term career. School leavers welcome.
- Reliable, punctual and happy working outdoors in all conditions
- Physically fit and comfortable with hands-on work
- Takes pride in doing a job properly
- Current White Card (Construction Induction card)
- Current Australian driver's licence
- No experience needed. A pre-apprenticeship course or some time on site is a bonus.

Pay and what we offer

- $14.73 - $16.20 per hour for a first-year junior apprentice (award rate, based on age and school completion), increasing each year of your apprenticeship
- A full apprenticeship with formal training at TAFE NSW Yallah ( Albion Park )
- One-on-one learning with an experienced trades
- A supportive team and local jobs around the Illawarra, with expansion to Nowra & Sutherland hire
- Full time apprentices in landscape construction may be eligible for up to $10,000 in government support payments, paid in instalments through to completion
