About the role
You will take ownership of geotechnical projects from the initial client enquiry and preparation of fee proposals and tenders through to investigations, reporting and final delivery. The core of this role is proactive project management: keeping work organised, coordinating people and resources, and ensuring commitments are met. You will be a key client contact, building relationships and maintaining a clear understanding of each project's status, priorities and next steps.
This role suits an engineer with robust project management skills who is eager to deepen their technical expertise through practical experience, feedback and guidance from senior engineers.
Key responsibilities
- Draft clear, commercially sound fee proposals and tender submissions, including scope, methodology, fees, assumptions and exclusions; obtain internal review and approval, meet submission deadlines and follow up enquiries.
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, taking responsibility for agreed scopes, budgets, timeframes and deliverables from engagement through to completion.
- Keep project records, schedules and action lists current. Track dependencies, chase outstanding information and flag delays early so the team and clients know what happens next.
- Plan geotechnical investigations, confirming access, site requirements, resources and sequencing so fieldwork is ready to proceed safely and efficiently.
- Review borehole logs, DCP, SPT, laboratory and other investigation data for completeness and consistency, and resolve gaps before reporting.
- Draft factual report components and develop interpretive reporting skills, incorporating senior review and feedback before reports are issued.
- Contribute to foundation, excavation, retaining wall and earthworks recommendations within your competence, with senior technical input and review as required.
- Coordinate field engineers, drillers, laboratories and subcontractors, and arrange timely handovers to reporting and review staff.
- Act as a key contact for clients, builders and consultants, clarifying requirements,
providing progress updates and discussing scope, fees and timeframes confidently.
- Attend sites as required to assess conditions and check the quality and consistency of field records and soil and rock logging.
About you
- Approximately 3–6 years of geotechnical consulting experience, with demonstrated responsibility for coordinating or managing projects.
- Proactive and dependable: you anticipate what is needed, take initiative and follow actions through without repeated prompting.
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or equivalent.
- Proficient in project management, with practical experience managing scopes, schedules, budgets, resources and competing priorities.
- Exceptionally well organised, with reliable systems for tracking deadlines, outstanding actions and the status of multiple projects.
- A sound practical understanding of geotechnical investigations, including soil and rock logging and field data quality.
- Experience preparing fee proposals or tender submissions, with an understanding of scope, pricing, assumptions, exclusions and commercial risk.
- Confident speaking with clients by phone, in meetings and on site, supported by clear written communication and strong relationship skills.
- Sound professional judgement, the ability to work independently, and the confidence to seek guidance or escalate issues promptly.
- A current Australian driver's licence.
