Brisbane Lyric Opera is seeking a Non-Executive Director to join our board and help shape the next stage of a young, ambitious opera company.

About Brisbane Lyric Opera

Brisbane Lyric Opera (BLO) is a qualified opera company founded in 2025 to bring opera of the highest standard to Brisbane and Southeast-Queensland audiences. Since our inception we have produced three concerts, employed seventeen musicians and filmed an opera scene for the feature film Beauty from Pain. Our own BLO Orchestra makes its debut in our Dies Natalis concert, and our education arm, BLO Academy, trains serious amateur and pre-qualified singers.

Our ambition is to produce our first full opera in 2027.

Brisbane Lyric Opera Limited is a public company limited by guarantee and is endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient by the ATO. We are building a sustainable business model that combines ticket sales, education revenue, grants and a growing circle of patrons.

The role The board sets BLO's direction, safeguards its finances and reputation, and holds the executive leadership accountable for delivering on our mission. As a Non-Executive Director you will:

· Contribute to strategy and long-term planning with other directors and executive team.

· Oversee financial performance, budgets, risk and compliance.

· Support and lead fundraising, including introductions to donors, sponsors and grant bodies.

· Uphold sound governance and the company's compliance obligations.

· Act as an ambassador for BLO in Brisbane's business, philanthropic and arts communities.

What we are looking for

We are particularly keen to hear from people with experience in one or more of these areas.

· Fundraising. A record of raising philanthropic, corporate or grant funding, ideally in the arts or not-for-profit sector, and a willingness to open doors to prospective patrons and sponsors.





· Corporate governance. Experience on a board or committee, a working knowledge of directors' duties under the Corporations Act, and the confidence to ask valuable questions and guide policy, risk and compliance. A company directors' qualification (such as the AICD course) is welcome but not essential.

· Accounting and finance. Professional training or experience as an accountant, auditor or finance leader, able to review financial reports, challenge budgets and cash flow forecasts, and strengthen our financial controls. Familiarity with not-for-profit reporting is an advantage.

You are collegial, independent in judgement and comfortable giving candid advice. You can commit the time to prepare for and attend meetings. You should be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and ideally live in or regularly visit Brisbane.

In return you will help build an arts company from an early stage, work closely with its founder, and see the direct result of your contribution on stage. No prior experience in opera is needed.

Time commitment and terms

· Position: Non-Executive Director of Brisbane Lyric Opera Limited. This is a voluntary, unpaid role, as BLO is a not-for-profit.

· Time: Board meetings (frequency to be confirmed, approx. monthly), plus preparation and occasional events and performances.

· Term: Three years.

· Location: Brisbane, with the option to join meetings online.
