Principal Embedded Software Engineer

Salary: up to $200,000 + Super + ESOP

Write the firmware, the edge software and the cloud plumbing that will run a fleet of distributed plants. We need a Principal Embedded Software Engineer to own the software that makes them run, safely and at scale.

The opportunity

You will own our software end to end, from the microcontroller registers to the cloud dashboard. This is a hands on role for someone who loves building new systems from scratch, and building them rapid.

You will sit at the centre of a small, sharp team working with physical prototypes every day. Your code will control high voltage power supplies driving plasma reactors, so getting it right matters. Getting it shipped matters too.

What you will do

Embedded (STM32 and PIC)

- Develop and maintain firmware on STM32 and PIC microcontrollers
- Implement and debug device communications over I2C, SPI, UART, RS485 and CAN
- Build robust drivers for sensors and actuators, ADC/DAC interfaces, timing, interrupts and watchdogs
- Design fault tolerant state machines for safety critical behaviour: interlocks, failsafes and graceful shutdown
- Integrate embedded systems with high voltage power supplies driving our plasma reactors
- Bring up new PCBs and modules with the electronics team, validating power rails, clocks and comms buses
- Support manufacturing bring up: flashing tools, test hooks, factory calibration and board validation

Edge and Linux (rack and controller level)

- Build services and applications on Linux based platforms (PLCs in our case) for control orchestration, logging and data capture,



configuration management, and remote command and diagnostics
- Own OTA updates across the device stack
- Interface with modules over RS485 and CAN, and expose clean APIs upwards
- Package and deploy reliably with systemd services, and containers where they help

IoT and cloud integration

- Implement and maintain MQTT telemetry and command channels (QoS, retained messages, session handling)
- Own device identity and provisioning, secure comms (certificates and keys) and fleet operations
- Feed data into dashboards and alerts using Grafana, Prometheus, InfluxDB or cloud equivalents
- Build internal tools that show engineers and operators what is happening across every device
- Help shape how we manage our future fleet of distributed green chemical plants

What we are looking for

- Strong hands on embedded experience in C/C++ on microcontrollers such as STM32 and PIC; you are at home with interrupts, peripherals and memory constraints
- Real hardware interfacing and debugging experience with at least I2C, RS485 and CAN, or equivalent depth you can demonstrate
- Linux development experience including system services and deployment (C/C++, Rust, Python or Go: pick your weapon)
- Experience with MQTT and IoT patterns: telemetry, remote commands and device provisioning
- Proven ability to debug across boundaries: hardware, firmware, Linux and network
- A track record shipping and managing distributed industrial devices or field deployed fleets
- OTA update experience
- Comfort working in a fast, iterative environment with physical prototypes on the bench
