About the role

We are seeking a full-time Retail Buyer to manage the selection and purchasing of seafood for resale through the business. You will decide what products to buy, in what quantities and at what prices, taking account of freshness, seasonal availability, expected sales and purchasing budgets. Reporting to the Director, you will manage supplier relationships and buying plans, assess market prices and support retail pricing decisions.

You will work with the Working Director and retail team to match purchases to customer demand and available storage capacity.

Key responsibilities

- Review POS sales reports, available stock and feedback from the retail team to forecast demand and plan frequent purchases of short shelf-life seafood.
- Select and purchase seafood for retail resale, assessing species, size, freshness, quality, availability and value before deciding the product mix and quantities.
- Plan purchasing volumes and delivery timing to support rapid stock turnover, maintain freshness and reduce overstocking, spoilage and shortages.
- Compare supplier offers and market prices, negotiate purchase prices, quantities, delivery schedules and supply terms, and participate in market bidding within agreed budgets.
- Develop retail pricing and promotional recommendations using purchase costs, market conditions, product freshness and margin targets, and coordinate their implementation with management.
- Liaise with the Director, Working Director and retail team on seasonal product plans, customer preferences, sales promotions and supply requirements.
- Prepare buying plans within agreed budgets, adjusting purchases for seasonal supply, price fluctuations, peak trading periods and expected customer demand.
- Maintain supplier relationships,



identify suitable alternative sources and review supplier quality and reliability to support consistent product availability.
- Check purchased seafood against agreed quality and food safety requirements, resolve supply discrepancies and maintain purchase, pricing and supplier records.

About you

- A Certificate IV or Diploma or higher qualification in business, retail management, marketing or a related field.
- At least one year of relevant experience in retail buying or procurement, preferably involving seafood or other fresh, perishable food products.
- Knowledge of seafood quality, freshness, seasonal availability and the commercial impact of short shelf life and fluctuating purchase prices.
- Strong negotiation, communication and supplier relationship skills, with sound judgement when comparing quality and price.
- The ability to interpret POS sales reports and purchasing records, and use spreadsheets to prepare buying plans and cost comparisons.
- The ability to make timely purchasing decisions within agreed budgets and coordinate effectively with management and store staff.
- An understanding of food safety and temperature control requirements relevant to buying and supplying fresh seafood.
