Broad in-house legal role | Significant business transformation | Flexible working arrangements
Greenfields Executive Recruitment & Search is partnering with an established Australian bank to appoint a Senior Legal Counsel specialising in Retail Banking .
This is an exciting time to join a bank that has experienced significant growth through multiple acquisitions and is now embarking on a substantial organisational transformation. With extensive investment in digital platforms, technology and new product offerings, the business is entering an important phase of its evolution, creating opportunities for an experienced banking lawyer to contribute to meaningful change and high-profile strategic initiatives.
You will join a stable, collaborative and experienced legal team that offers something increasingly difficult to find in larger financial institutions: genuine variety. Rather than being confined to a narrowly defined specialism or working within a highly siloed legal function, you will have the opportunity to work across multiple areas of law, develop broader commercial expertise and gain exposure to a wide range of business matters.
With mentoring, ongoing professional development and direct engagement with senior stakeholders , this is an opportunity to build on your technical banking expertise while continuing to grow as a well-rounded in-house lawyer.
The bank also offers flexible working arrangements, stunning new CBD offices and a supportive working environment , providing an attractive combination of interesting work, professional development and work-life balance.
The role
- Retail banking and regulation: Provide specialist legal advice across retail banking, consumer credit, deposit-taking and financial services regulation, including the National Credit Code, prudential standards and the Customer Owned Banking Code of Practice.
- Regulatory compliance: Advise on obligations under the Corporations Act, Banking Act and ASIC and APRA regulatory frameworks,
interpreting legislative developments and providing practical guidance on their implications for the business.
- Commercial contracts and strategic transactions: Draft, review and negotiate commercial agreements, financing arrangements and service contracts, while supporting acquisitions, partnerships, product development and broader business transformation initiatives.
- Legal risk and dispute management: Identify and manage legal risks across banking operations, collaborate with risk and compliance teams, and oversee disputes and litigation, including engagement with external legal advisers.
- Corporate governance and Board matters: Support company secretarial and governance matters, including legal input into Board papers and resolutions, directors' duties, conflicts of interest and governance obligations.
- Broader commercial and business partnering: Work closely with senior executives and stakeholders across the organisation, providing practical legal advice on a variety of matters including technology procurement, privacy, employment and corporate matters.
About you You will bring substantial experience in banking, finance or corporate law , gained within a financial institution or private practice environment, with strong exposure to retail banking. You will have developed a sound understanding of the legal and regulatory requirements applying to banking products and operations, particularly deposits, savings and residential mortgages.
Strong technical knowledge of ASIC and APRA regulatory frameworks, the National Credit Code, retail deposit-taking requirements and prudential standards will be essential.
Equally important is your ability to interpret complex legal and regulatory issues and provide practical, commercially considered solutions.
You will be a confident and approachable legal professional who enjoys building relationships across a business and working collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels. You will bring sound judgement, strong communication skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a changing business environment.
Experience within mutual banking will be highly regarded, as will broader exposure to privacy, financial product disclosure, technology contracts, employment law, corporate governance and dispute resolution.
This chance will particularly appeal to a banking lawyer seeking greater variety, meaningful involvement in business transformation and the prospect to develop beyond a traditional specialist legal role , while benefiting from the support and mentoring of an experienced team.
