Safety & Risk Manager

Who we are The new Sydney Fish Market (nSFM) is the southern hemisphere’s largest fish market, one of Australia’s most visited attractions, and the beating heart of the nation’s seafood industry.

With a-once-in-a-generation precinct that redefines the retail, dining, and wholesale experience on Sydney’s waterfront now in operation, we are looking for a people-first safety leader who is just as comfortable on the auction floor at 5 am as they are advising Executives and the Board. This is a rare opportunity to shape safety culture across one of Sydney’s most distinctive, fast-moving workplaces.

You will be our Safety lead and a visible presence across the market, supporting Employees, Operations teams and working with wholesale and retail teams, contractors and alongside our facility partner. With the support of a QHSE Officer, you will support our goal of a culture where people speak up, solve problems together and look out for one another.

This role reports into the Executive team through the Head of People and Culture, with a dotted reporting line to Legal Counsel for enterprise risk. It works closely with our facilities partner. Food safety is led separately by the Food Safety Manager.

What you’ll make happen

- Build a practical, multi-year safety culture strategy and bring it to life across the SFM tenancy.

- Be present where the work happens—listening to workers, partnering with HSRs and turning frontline insight into safer ways of working.

- Coach leaders and supervisors to lead safety with confidence, consistency and care.

- Lead and develop the safety team, ensuring solid day-to-day safety coverage at peak times.

- Strengthen psychosocial safety, fatigue management, wellbeing, injury management and return-to-work practices.

- Keep our WHS and environmental systems effective and audit-ready, maintaining ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certification.

- Work closely with our facilities partner, regulators, specialist suppliers and Legal Counsel on shared safety and enterprise risk priorities.

- Analyse safety and wellbeing data and prepare clear reporting for the Executive, Board and P&C; Safety Executive Workstream.

- Administer the risk management system, maintaining the strategic risk register and contributing to Risk in Change assessments.

- Manage and own our Digital safety platform, our safety induction, compliance and governance (Employment Hero / Rapid)

- Manage the safety operating budget and specialist safety and wellbeing suppliers and consultants.

What you’ll bring

- You are a credible, hands-on Safety professional who builds trust on the floor and influences at every level. You combine strong systems knowledge with sound judgement, clear communication and a genuine commitment to worker wellbeing.

- A diploma or degree in WHS or a related discipline; Certificate IV with substantial experience will also be considered.

- At least eight years’ WHS experience, including senior operational work and supervision of at least one team member.

- Strong experience in worker consultation, psychosocial hazards, injury management, audits, contractor safety and incident investigation.

- A genuine passion for growing people. You’ll be supported by a capable,

motivated HSE professional with clear ambitions, and you’ll have the opportunity to mentor and develop them into their next role.

- Sound knowledge of NSW WHS legislation, relevant Codes of Practice and ISO 45001.

- Experience in food production, wholesale or retail markets, a high-visitation venue or another complex operational environment will be highly advantageous

- Lead Auditor certification for ISO 45001, or willingness to obtain it within 12 months.

- A current driver licence, First Aid certificate and flexibility for early mornings, weekends and peak periods.

Experience that will help you thrive

Experience in a multi-tenant food precinct, tourist destination or major events site will be highly regarded, as will exposure to outsourced facilities management, the Bradley Curve or another safety maturity model, culturally and linguistically diverse workforces, ISO 31000, Rapid or a similar digital safety platform, environmental management and Mental Health First Aid.
