Too much routine “legal work” still ends up with lawyers, which slows the business down and pulls lawyers away from the work that actually needs their judgement.

So, we built nicholii. The result is a place where governed AI, automation and legal expertise come together.

Why this role exists

This is not a traditional legal role and it’s not a full-time one (at least, not yet). We’re looking for an experienced employment lawyer to join us on a fractional basis, who is excited to practice law a little differently.

You’ll run nicholii’s employment law function and own matters end to end. That means providing practical, commercially focused employment law support to our customers, building and prototyping the plain English templates and automated employment documents that sit on the nicholii platform and being our trusted adviser on nicholii’s own employment law matters as we grow.

The role is fractional and flexible. You’ll have real say over when and where you work and you won’t be micromanaged.

We are a small, ambitious and hands-on team. That means plenty of ownership, very little bureaucracy and the opportunity to have a proper influence over our customers, our product and how this role develops.

No two days will look the same and we think that’s part of the fun.

What you’ll be doing

- Providing strategic and pragmatic advice to our customers on front-end, non-contentious employment law and regulatory matters (no investigations or litigation)
- Advising the nicholii leadership team on our own employment law matters as the business grows




- Building and prototyping plain English employment templates on the platform and automating employment agreements and related documents
- Supporting customer onboarding, implementation and training on the platform
- Testing, building and prototyping new features, sharing what you learn and helping to shape the development of the platform
- Partnering closely with our internal legal, customer and product teams, with plenty of scope to get involved beyond the edges of your

About you You’re an experienced employment lawyer with strong technical skills and sound commercial judgement. You enjoy getting into the detail, but you’re equally interested in improving how legal work is delivered.

You don’t need to have worked in legal tech before. What matters is that you’re curious, comfortable with technology and excited by the prospect to build a better way of doing legal work.

You’ll have

- 5+ years’ PQE in employment law gained in private practice, in-house or both
- An unrestricted Australian practising certificate (essential)
- A practical, commercial approach to legal advice
- A cooperative working style with the ability to also work independently across different parts of the business
- Confidence working directly with customers and senior stakeholders
- A strong bias for action with an interest in legal technology and automation
- Curiosity, adaptability and a willingness to get your hands dirty in a growing business
- Ideally based in Sydney (preferred, but not essential)
