About the role
Dave's Travel Group is looking for more good people to join our Hobart team for the summer cruise season and beyond.
You'll be showcasing the best of Hobart and southern Tasmania through a variety of experiences, from historic pub walks and local food tours to city sightseeing and cruise excursions exploring the region's history, culture and local producers.
We're looking for confident, engaging people who can tell a good story, read a crowd and give visitors a genuinely local experience.
We're particularly interested in people who know Hobart well and can bring its stories to life for visitors. We're building a team for the long term, so we're looking for locals who plan to stick around, rather than people just passing through for the summer.
Previous guiding experience is great, but it's not essential. Personality, reliability and the ability to communicate matter most.
The work
Our busiest period is the summer cruise season, with around 70 ship visits to Hobart between October and April, alongside our regular tours operating throughout the year.
Tours include
- Hobart Liquid History Pub Tour: Historic pubs, local drinks and stories of early Hobart.
- Dave's Eats Hobart: Walking food tours showcasing Tasmanian producers and local flavours.
- Hobart City & Waterfront Tours: Walking and sightseeing tours, particularly for cruise visitors.
- Cruise Shore Excursions: A range of experiences around Hobart and southern Tasmania, including sightseeing, history, food, wine, whisky, beer and visits to local producers.
- Private & Group Tours: Tailored experiences for visitors and groups exploring Hobart.
Some guides will work across a range of tours and dates; others may suit a particular tour or only be available on certain days.
We have both driving and non-driving roles. A driver's licence and appropriate passenger transport accreditation are an advantage but are not essential for all guiding work.
For solid guides, there are also opportunities to work in our other regions, including Sydney and Newcastle.
About you
We're looking for people who:
- Are confident and engaging communicators, comfortable speaking to groups.
- Know Hobart and Tasmania well, with a genuine interest in local history, food, drinks and culture.
- Are based locally and interested in being part of our team beyond the summer season.
- Are reliable, organised and comfortable taking responsibility for guests.
- Can tell a compelling story rather than simply recite facts.
- Are comfortable using basic phone apps to communicate with our Operations team and manage tour logistics.
- Have availability for some weekday and/or weekend tours.
Experience in tourism, hospitality, teaching, performing, customer service or public speaking is an advantage, but not essential.
Becoming a Dave
Before guiding paid tours, new guides go through our Aspiring Dave process. Allow around 10 hours initially, depending on your experience and what you already know.
The process includes
1. Interview: Meet with our team to discuss your experience, interests and which tours might suit you.
2. Join a tour:
Come along as a guest to see how our tours operate.
3. Self-directed learning: Receive our tour notes and learning resources to prepare for your first tour.
4. Practice: Join additional tours if needed and practise delivering the content through mock touring.
5. Assessment: Demonstrate your knowledge, storytelling and guiding ability to a Dave's manager.
6. Become a Dave: Complete your induction and start guiding paid tours.
You'll usually start by learning one tour that suits your interests and experience, with opportunities to learn others over time.
How to apply
Step 1: Apply through SEEK
Submit your application, including your experience and general availability.
Step 2: Complete our application form and video
Suitable applicants will receive a link to a short application form and be asked to upload a 2–3 minute video telling us a story about someone or something in Hobart.
It could be a fascinating local character, a historic building, an interesting event, a local business or something unusual about the city.
Speak as though you're guiding a group of visitors who have never been to Hobart before.
We're not looking for professional video production or fancy editing. We want to see how you communicate, tell a story and come across naturally, because that tells us much more about a potential guide than a polished CV.
The video is a required part of our screening process.
Step 3: Interview
We'll review your application and video and invite shortlisted candidates to interview before progressing through the Aspiring Dave process.
If you know Hobart, love telling stories and reckon you'd make a great Dave, we'd love to hear from you!
