Lead our Melbourne flagship store, inspire a brilliant team and help shape the next chapter of Merry People retail.
At Merry People, we've spent over 10 years building a brand grounded in authenticity, kindness, adventure and joy. From weekend market stalls to a growing global community, we've always believed that practical can be playful.
Our first permanent store on Manchester Lane is a physical extension of the Merry People community, and a place where our customers can experience the personality, warmth and joy of our brand firsthand. With our current Store Manager moving overseas, we’re looking for an experienced, commercially minded and passionate leader to take the store into its next chapter.
As our Retail Store Manager, you’ll own the store’s commercial performance, customer and team experience, and help shape the future of our growing retail presence. You will report to our Head of Customer and work closely with our head office team.
Our Story
Merry People began in 2014 with a sketch, a leap of faith and a pair of boots. Our founder, Dani, was working in a corporate job in Melbourne and couldn't find a pair of rain boots that were both functional for wet-weather commutes and stylish enough for the office. Drawing on her country upbringing in South Gippsland, and a longing for more creativity and joy, she designed her own.
From weekend market stalls to customers across Australia, the UK and the US, Merry People has become a brand loved for its quality, individuality and optimism. Manchester Lane is our home in the heart of Melbourne, and it’s only the beginning of our retail story.
What you'll be doing
- Lead the day-to-day operations of our Melbourne store, taking ownership of its commercial performance, people and customer experience.
- Drive sales performance through proactive management of targets, key retail metrics and opportunities for growth.
- Coach, motivate and develop a high-performing retail team, creating a positive, accountable and connected team culture.

- Act as the bridge between our customers and head office, sharing valuable feedback, product insights and opportunities to improve.
- Collaborate with the broader Merry People team to continuously improve processes, customer experience and retail operations.
- Bring fresh ideas, initiative and a solutions-focused mindset to help shape the next chapter of Merry People retail.
What we're looking for
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in a retail management role, ideally within apparel, footwear or lifestyle brands.
- A proven track record of achieving sales targets,
driving commercial performance and managing store profitability.
- A confident, hands-on leader who knows how to motivate, coach and develop a team.
- Strong operational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- A genuine passion for customer experience and building meaningful connections with customers and the community.
- Someone who takes initiative, solves problems and is comfortable working autonomously while staying connected to the broader business.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with others.
- Most importantly, someone who genuinely connects with our values of authenticity, kindness, adventure and joy, and brings their own personality and energy to the role.
What we can offer
- Free Merry People boots (of course!)
- A workplace where joy, fun and individuality are celebrated every day.
- The opportunity to take ownership of an established store and make a meaningful impact on its continued success.
- Opportunities to grow with the business as our retail footprint expands.
