Experienced Structural Steel Welder – Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)
Brunton Engineering | Full-Time | Immediate Start
About Brunton Engineering
We don't build production-line products—we build complex structural steel for major Australian infrastructure projects. If you're an experienced welder who enjoys challenging work, takes pride in producing exceptional welds, and wants to spend your days doing what you do best, you'll fit right in.
We're specifically seeking an experienced Submerged Arc Welder (SAW) to join our structural steel fabrication team.
This position requires demonstrated, hands-on experience operating Submerged Arc Welding equipment in a heavy structural steel fabrication environment. Previous SAW experience is essential and applicants without this experience will not be considered.
This role is ideal for someone who takes satisfaction in producing high-quality welds, follows procedures without shortcuts, and wants to work in a workshop where welding excellence is valued.
What You'll Be Doing
- Operating Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) equipment to produce high-quality welds on heavy structural steel components.
- Setting up and adjusting SAW equipment, including welding parameters, wire feed, travel speed and flux management.
- Producing consistent, high-integrity welds on structural steel beams, girders, columns and other fabricated assemblies.
- Welding structural steel to AS 1554 requirements.
- Working to approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Producing welds that consistently meet visual inspection and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) requirements.
- Undertaking MIG/MAG (GMAW) and Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
where required.
- Contributing to the fabrication of major infrastructure projects, including bridges and large structural steel assemblies.
- Working safely and maintaining Brunton Engineering's quality and Steelwork Compliance Australia certification standards.
What We're Looking For
Essential Requirements:
- Demonstrated practical experience in Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) — this is a mandatory requirement.
- Proven ability to independently set up, operate and troubleshoot SAW equipment.
- Experience producing high-quality, multi-pass welds on heavy structural steel sections.
- Sound understanding of welding parameters, weld preparation, penetration, distortion control and weld quality.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Experience producing welds subject to NDT, including Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) and Visual Testing (VT).
- Strong commitment to safety, quality and workmanship.
- Reliability, punctuality and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Flexibility to undertake occasional weekend work when project requirements demand it.
Additional Experience Highly Regarded
- Heavy structural steel fabrication for bridges, infrastructure or industrial projects.
- Welding to AS 1554.
- Working within AS 5131 Construction Category 3 (CC3) quality systems.
- Experience with automated or mechanised welding systems.
- Experience with MIG/MAG, FCAW and MMAW welding processes.
- Working within an ISO 3834.2 certified welding environment.
Applicants holding Welding Australia qualifications such as International Welding Practitioner (IWP) or Welding Supervisor are also encouraged to apply. Brunton Engineering recognises these advanced qualifications and offers remuneration that reflects the additional capability they bring to the business.
What We Offer
- Full-time, stable employment with an established structural steel fabrication business.
- The chance to work on major Australian infrastructure projects.
- Challenging and technically interesting fabrication work.
- A workshop environment that values welding quality and professional workmanship.
- Competitive remuneration commensurate with experience and qualifications.
- Overtime opportunities for those willing.
Hours: Day Shift, 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Commencement: Immediate start available.
Apply Now
If your idea of a good day is hood down, arc on, and producing welds you're proud to put your name to, we'd love to hear from you.
Please note: Demonstrated Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) experience is essential for this position. Applicants should clearly outline their previous SAW experience, including the equipment operated and the types of structural steel welding undertaken.
