The Story
If you are a passionate, highly driven sheep enthusiast looking for an energetic, hands-on role where you can take real ownership of a top-tier flock while continuing to learn and develop, this opportunity offers an exceptional career step.
Spanning 2,000 hectares of highly productive country featuring fertile volcanic soils and basalt flats in a reliable high-rainfall zone, this progressive family enterprise seamlessly integrates broadacre cropping with a major livestock operation. Located within convenient access to both Ballarat and Maryborough (under 40 minutes), the property offers the perfect balance of commercial scale and family lifestyle, providing easy access to major regional hubs, top schools, services, and partner employment opportunities.
Working directly under the guidance of the Farm Manager, you will be given the autonomy to drive the daily execution of the livestock enterprise. Management is deeply committed to teaching, mentoring, and upskilling, making this an ideal environment for a keen livestock operator wanting to sharpen their commercial sheep management skills. The role is approximately 95% livestock-focused, allowing you to immerse yourself in flock performance while stepping in to support broadacre cropping operations during peak seasonal periods. The business prides itself on maintaining a pleasant, team-oriented, and low-turnover workplace culture where efficiency, animal welfare, and enthusiasm are genuinely valued.
The Operation
The livestock enterprise is expanding, with target flock numbers set to hit 4,000 Merino ewes and 3,000 crossbred ewes over the next 12 months. The breeding objective focuses on chasing top-quality Merino wool while maintaining a large, sound frame size to finish wether lambs efficiently.
Infrastructure and livestock handling facilities across the property are truly exceptional, designed specifically for ease of management and high welfare standards. The enterprise features two brand-new, modern ProWay sheep yard setups—including one undercover working facility—complete with modern sheep handlers, excellent laneway systems, and digital farm management software (AgriWebb). The livestock program is backed by an integrated 2,000-hectare cropping engine that runs late-model, tech-enabled John Deere and Case machinery, ensuring high-quality fodder, stubble, and grain reserves.
The Role
Reporting directly to the Farm Manager, you will take hands-on charge of daily flock routines and livestock health, while also providing day-to-day guidance to a couple of farmhands when management is off-site.
Key responsibilities include:
- Flock Execution & Care: Running daily operations across the Merino and crossbred breeding ewes, lamb finishing programs, and flock growth targets.
- Seasonal Operations: Planning and carrying out joining, lambing, marking, weaning, pregnancy scanning, shearing, and crutching programs using modern ProWay yards and equipment.
- Wool & Lamb Production: Monitoring growth rates, wool cut, and pasture nutrition to ensure prime lamb turnoff and high-value wool production.
- Team & Operations Support: Working alongside and assisting in guiding farmhands during daily sheep work and providing operational support to broadacre cropping activities during peak seasonal windows.
- Data & Health:
Keeping accurate digital livestock records utilising AgriWebb, managing disease prevention, and maintaining strict animal welfare standards.
The Ideal Candidate

Essential attributes include:
- Practical hands-on experience in commercial sheep production, wool growing, and lamb finishing.
- Strong work ethic, enthusiasm to learn, and the ability to help guide farmhands on daily tasks.
